Janie11.jpgWinters were bitterly cold, with heavy snowfalls.

Janie13.jpgTrees that kept the camp well-hidden were cut down and used to feed the woodburning stoves for heat and to bake tons of bread on a daily basis.

Eventually the camp was devoid of it's heavy forestation.

Janie15.jpgIn Janury 1947, with the Iron Curtain closing in around eastern Europe, the camp residents were in fear of being sent home to communism, so they staged a protest against a "nationality screening" that was being held at the camp.

Janie16.jpgDuring the Easter season, traveling priests would visit the camp to celebrate mass, and bless the Easter food.
