I served in A/4/6 in Berlin. But I made 2 zone trips to WildFlecken (Wild Chicken) alot of training we got, I remember how lousy the weather was, cold, foggy and rainy and was not a place I'd of liked to have been stationed at. But it is nonetheless a memory of my youth hood and served it's purpose as a training center.

I will be in Wildflecken from January 11-13. I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me where to stay, eat, and what to visit while I am there. I would appreciate any info you could give me. Thank you so very much.

I had no idea this guestbook existed, or how many people remember Wildflecken. I almost made it back there this year, but after driving 1200 miles through Holland, Belgium, and France, decided to head back to the airport in Amsterdam. I still plan to make it back there someday, but was a little disappointed to learn from this website that the U.S. Army is no longer there. Although it was only two years, I remember it very well. I especially recall that whenever we went down to Wurtsburg, we were the only guys wearing pile caps, parkas, and rubber boots over our combat boots - the snow troops down to see the big city. Wildflecken - what a place to learn to drink beer!

I had to have had the coolest 2 jobs there. I worked at the Ski Hill and Outdoor Rec for a year and a half. I worked for SSG Ron Martin at the Ski Hill. I also worked for a German named Harald Sellner(?), who was the sponsor of the Rodeo Club and was as much of a cowboy I've ever known. I believe his father worked at the Rec Center as well. I would like to hear from Harald if anyone there knows how to get us in touch. I also was a run driver for the Radar Maint. Section, and spent all of the spring, summer and fall of '79 driving between Wildflecken, Fulda, and Bad Kissingen. If anyone from those days remembers, please feel free to e-mail.

I drove the 114 apc,I think they used them for target practice after I got out.I have some bad but mostly good memories of that wild place. The surrounding country-side was a beautiful site to behold, even on it's darkest days.I was there when the barracks were remodeled and we no longer had to carry 5 gallon cans of fuel oil up from the basement.I could right a book about some of my experiences there if I could only remember them all.I wish I had all the money I spent on beer while I was there......good webpage hope to hear from anyone who might remember me.

During my time in Wildflecken I hated it because of the cold freezing weather even on the warmest day of the year!I do have
great pictures and wonderful memories of friends that I met while I was there, but because of the cold I have no desire to go back to visit. It is only recently that my daughter found this site, and my wife commented on the pictures and described them as being "absolutely breathtaking".After 32yrs.of being away from there I can agree besides the beer the countryside and mountains were beautiful.
Anyone out there that was in Wildflecken the same time as me please drop me a line.

Just a hello to all, and a special hello to Mr. Pizzi Gutman and Frau Hummel and all the others we met while at the reunion in July 1999. It was wonderful being there for Wildflecken's 475th Geburstag. We are looking foorowrd to a revisit, but may not be able to wait til the next 5 year reunion, since we are 68 (Richard) and 62 (Barbara). Besides, we loved iot so much that we want to try to come back much sooner. The hospitality was wonderful. If yu haven't attended a reuinion at Wildflecken, Try your best to do it..you will never be sorry! If you were there, we were the elderly couple that danced almost every dance on the cinder track around the sportsplatz to the groovy music Mr. Gutmann's "Swinging Five" band. If anyone remembers me from 58-60, or from the reunion, please send me an e mail. Aug weidersehen!

I spent two weeks there in October '72 and several weekend alerts there in '73.
We always stayed out in the field in tents, we was pretty close o the dilapidated village that was down in a valley.
One time, when we were doing some orienteering in the woods, we walked out of the woods to a beautiful restaurant for lunch. I remember. I think, that it sat on the top of a hill with a great view.
If anybody knows the name of that restaurant, I would love to know it.

Thanks very much,

Great place for first assignment as 2nd LT.
Great beer at the Kruezberg, and good beer from Frau Fuchs at the
Officer's Club.
Also for a few months with 412L Det, HHB 10th ADA Group with the
601st ACWS (USAF) on the Wasserkuppe.
Will always remember "The Wild Place."

The book Heinz Leitsch is looking for is The Wild Place by
Kathryn Hulme, published in 1953 by Little, Brown, and Company
in Boston, USA. True account of her experiences with refugees in
Wildflecken from 1945-1950 when she was with the UN Refugee organization
adminstering the camp. Now out of print, may be able to find a
copy in used book stores on the Internet such as Barnes & Noble. I
first read the book in Wildflecken when I was stationed there.

I was in the Army (1st Aviation Brigade - Long Bihn, Vietnam)from 7/66 to 2/70, however, my connection with Wildflecken (as you can see from the dates) stems from the immediate post war years when the area was utilized as a displaced persons camp. In fact I was born in the Wildflecken camp. My parent's were DPs from Poland (Teodor & Stefania Lize). We eventually immigrated to the U.S. in September 1949.

Thanks for your informative website! My search for information relating to my parent's post was experience has been given a boost by your pictures. I would be very gragefule to hear from you if you know of additional sources of old information relating to Wildflecken's DP camp years.

Again, thanks for your website.

I made many trips to Wildflecten from Bad Hersfeld in a tank and it seem mostly in the winter where a tanker really froze his butt off. I beleive wildflecten was one of the coldest places in Germany. Like, others I enjoyed Germany very much and intend to visit in the very near future.

I loved Wildflecken. It would have been wonderful to stay there for many years; but orders to Vietnam and a military career took me around the world. I would love to know how some of the great people I knew there are doing today. Americans I remember: Chambers, Richie, Nutter, Pamphley, Staton, Webster, Mitchum, Vetter, Sheppard, Belia, Dr. Johnson, Dr Slifkin, Payne, Manley, Gellespie Britten, Quinn, Snuffy Smith. Germans I remember: Shomberg, Zilke, Frau Fuchs, Renate Blank, Lemberg, Leuchs, Shutte, Wiegand, Frau Leibl and daughter Karla from Bischofsheim, Frau Knot from Gersfeld, Frau Polacheck. If any of the above read this note, I hope you are well and I wish you the very best. I would love to hear from you. I recently heard from Bob Hemphill and sounds like he's doing great. I planto be in Germany in about three weeks. Perhaps I'll get to Wldflecken.

Was initially assigned to the ground surveillance radar section as a young buck sergeant. The moved to the S-3 shop as the air ops NCO. Tor was cutrailed when DA cleaned out all ops/intel folks for RVN service.
Memories: Butt deep in snow; Raiding the messhall for wood to start stove in rooms; beer at the Kreuzberg; Jaegerschnitzel in Bishofsheim for 1.75 d-marks. Gasser APCs and no sparkplugs. Hibernating at the NCO club and unruly visitors from Berlin, Manheim, and elsewhere.

I see the battalion XO (then MAJ Griffiths) and Sct Platoon Leader (then 1LT Al Stewart) every now and then. Lost track of everyone else.

I remember when I first got to Wildflecken, one of the other soldiers complained about the lousy weather. He said it snowed on his birthday the year before. I was born on December 3rd, so it didn't seem that odd to me. He said his birthday was June 30th. I still miss it, but not the boar hogs. Those things are scary up close.

It took a few years to appreciate all that we saw and did and felt in Wildflecken. Some people will forever be in our hearts and some best left forgotten!!! It's been ten years since we left Germany and we tell our children about it and share with them in photos and memories what we hope to someday show them in person. here's to the good times, and bad ones have been forgotten...

My father was a retired Navy man, and one of the wisest lessons he taught me was in the form of a riddle. While on leave after leaving Wildflecken he asked me if I knew what the two best duty stations were. Expecting to hear his answer as two exotic seaports that I had never seen, he answered "The one you are leaving and the one you are going to. How wise he was. Leaving Wildflecken did nothing but make me wish that I could return. The fond memories definitely outweigh any bad experiences.

Stationed at Wildflecken for approximately 4 months during the Berlin Wall crisis. I was one of the 39th's ditty-dum-dum-ditty CW operatiors, but always used the TTY when communicating with USEAR HQ in Frankfurt. Received alot of jamming (Bag Pipe) so we eventually used the telepnone even though it was unsecured. Did not have the technology at the time. Germany is a great country, proud to have served her. Been back to Germany a few times, will have to stop by Wildflecken the next time.

Was assigned to Motor pool and became courier driver. Made the trip
from Wildflecken to Bad Kissingen, Schweinfurt, Wurzberg then back

At that time the two main bars down in the village were the
Mickey Mouse and the Hillbilly which was ran by a guy named Johnny.
I sold tickets at the post Theatre. We went to the Monastary a lot

Hello...

My name is Chuck Dodds and I would like to clarify and elaborate on
Angel's message dated 17 Juli... Though I personally was never in
the Army or in Wildflecken, my brother, William Michael Dodds, was
stationed there from approx. 1974 (or 75) until his death in April,
1979.

I was a young teenager at the time and don't remember all the details
such as his unit and battalion numbers, but he was an SP/4, I believe,
and served one full tour and had re-upped for another. He drove an
APC in some infantry unit and I only remember a couple of things
about his actual duties there. One was when his company went out on
maneuvers, most of the other guys would curse him from their muddy
and/or (more likely) snowy foxholes and tents as he slept in, uh, I
mean "guarded", his APC. Another thing I seem to remember is once he
smashed and broke his little finger in the gun turret or track of his
vehicle.

I also know a little of his leave times... He was one bigtime party
animal... drinking and smoking with the best of 'em... It's quite
possible he was known as "Wolfman" or "Mongo" because of his size,
voracious appetite, thick black hair and beard...he wandered the
Germany countryside on various road trips sampling beer in Munich
and hashish in Copenhagen...

Somewhere along the line, he met and fell in love with a frauline by
the name of Gabrielle (sp?) or Gaby. I don't know her family name or
things would be way too easy, but I believe she was from somewhere
within 50 clicks of Wildflecken and her family was from outside of
Munich. He planned on marrying her, even though her family strongly
disagreed with it, and I believe it is very possible they had a
child, who would be about 20 years old now.

As Angel said, he was killed in an auto accident but it was not in
a military vehicle. It was in his own car (which I want to say was
an Impala but that seems rather large for the German streets) and
probably on a return trip from seeing Gaby, but he lost control
somewhere along the route and smashed head on into a cinder block
wall and was shipped back to us in a box... a very nice box with a
flag and everything, but a box nonetheless...

Anyway, I would like to make contact with someone who knew and
remembers my brother or especially has any further information about
Gaby and her whereabouts. If you were there in the mid to late 70's
and know anything about Mike Dodds, his tour(s) there or Gaby, please
email me at cid@inreach.com.

I wish I had known earlier about the upcoming reunion... I just
returned yesterday from a month long trip to Dresden my company sent
me on and if I had known, I might have been able to be there in my
brother's stead, but alas... Those of you that are lucky enough to
be there, could you do me a favor and ask around if anyone knew him?
If so, please drop me a note with their contact info or pass my email
addy on to them...

Thank you for listening and any help is greatly appreciated...

Chuck Dodds

My first Army tour was in Wildflecken. A really great learning
experience! I continued to draw on the things I learned from that
tour throughout the rest of my 22-year Army career. Our oldest
son was born while at Wildflecken. He and I will be coming back
for the July 5th Year reunion so he can see where he lived his first
18 months. Hope to meet some old friends while there.

I am looking for anyone who might have known Mike Dodds in the 80's. He
was stationed in Wildflecken and died near there in a crash in an army
truck or jeep. If anyone can help me with this search, please email
me. I believe he is also buried in the area. His family would like
more information about this.
thank you.

I am trying to get into contact with people who may have served with anyone with these last names: Barnett, Atwood, Hooper, Speck, and Webb. I would appreciate any help that could be given.

I went to 'flecken in '72 as a ground surr. radar operator. We would do attached duty on the border with the 2nd/2nd Cav. on the Coburg & Hof sectors. In '74, my hearing went out and I was made Training NCO for the CSC company. I made a return trip in '89, only to find that 2nd/15th was no where around and our old ammo dump was a dog training site! Now the 15th Inf. is back in the states and the 2nd has been reflagged... I forget under which unit?
