Wildflecken was our first tour in the US Army. We had many great experiences and met many life long friends there. Hello to our friends Elsa and Diethardt Romeis...lots of good times on Silberhofweg! We hope to visit someday soon and relive some great times (if that's possible). I think our first stop might be Kloster Kreuzberg...to pray, of course!

Thank you for developing this website. Looking at the photos brought back many fond memories. Wildflecken was my first assignment in the US Army. I served as a Platoon Leader in B Co, 54th Engineer Battalion for a little over a year, and then was the Asst S3 for almost two years. My wife Teresa and I lived in downtown Wildflecken for 18 months, and then moved on post for the last 18 months. Everyone has different memories of their time at Wildflecken. The Cold War was still alive and well in the late 70s/early 80s, and there was a sense that our mission was vitally important. I remember monthly (at least) alerts when the unit would roll out to Local Dispersal Areas in less than 2 hours (ready to go to war). I remember Terrain Walks, Battle Books, training deployments to Bad Hersfeld, the Stoppelsburg, the Tann Pocket, REFORGERs, etc. I remember seeing it snow in July, and blanket the ground solid white…and an hour later, it was all gone. I ember fog so thick you couldn’t see from one building to the next. I remember tire chains and cobblestone streets, gas ration coupons, and 3-4 feet of snow our second winter at Wildflecken. I remember Bille at the Stars and Stripes Bookstore. But my fondest memory is of the sense of community...you knew everyone at Wildflecken. We worked and trained together, played and laughed together. It was like famiy....and nothing came close to it the rest of my military career.

What a rush. Saw a few names, Norm, Bob, Joe, but few else. Where's T-Nag? Stutchie? I remember showing up in gorgeous late August to a base full of zombies, staying up late every night to call branch and beg to be sent to Saudi. The whoel Gulf War was like somebody else's bad dream for me...I pulled guard duty on empty winter roads and in the passenger seat of MP cars outside off-post housing.

I also rode my bike all over that place. Me and Jim Wheeler from the Delta company and some crazy Kentucky fella named Buck...used to go mountain biking in the summer of 91 up to the top of the Kreuzberg and drink beer before it shut up at 8 pm.....then try and wobble the downhill home.

I got TDY'd out of there to Munich and Wobeck, as the Army tried to save my Russian skills for themselves, but always looked forward to coming back to the CHicken. Drunken blind nights in the Green Goose, pissing on my own shoes (usually) watching the steam come up from the urinals. Eating snails in the chinese restaurant with my roommate Jimmy Lee, the only Chinese German translator in the army.

I was in a couple of plays with Guy Wetzel down at the post theater, and had this crazy off-post civilian girlfriend whose mom and dad were teachers at the elementary school. I remember very clearly the very steamy nights with her at her parents' house way down in the town at the nub end of the valley.

I'll write a book someday about that place, and make a big Hollywood movie about the Chicken...somebody ought to anyway, because it was such a trip....

Peace,man

I remember sharing a barracks with medics and scouts. Our barracks was notorious for article-15's. After two article-15's Cpt. Doyle made me assistant armorer. Also went with military intelligance (as a driver) for a long field problem. I remember our fighting positions, the Ammunition supply point, alerts, border duty, green goose and monestary. I have some cool pictures that I will work on getting to this site. There were many good times and bad times. I would like to hear from some old friends.

This was my second trip this year to WTA. I was able to get on tour post and I would like to say the post is being kept up very well. I could not say the same for Frankfurt. I brought a few of my friends to the Kloster Kreuzburg and had some great beer at the Cafe. We stayed at the Guest Haus Krone in Bad Bruckenau. I certainly miss WTA and all of the great friends I made there.
Happy Holidays and God Speed to all.

Despite Summer only adding up to two weeks of bad skiing, I had more
fund in Wildflecken than I can remember. A common failing what with
the "Zwei Tannen", "Jerry's Keller Bar" and the "Kruesburg" being
the usual haunts. I left Wildflecken as a Sgt., bound for jump
school in Ft. Benning and eventual assignment to 2nd Bat. 505th Inf,
82nd Airborne, and a free trip to the Carribean, (Grenada).

If any one out there remembers me, and cares, I'm now the Patrol Agent
In Charge of the U. S. Border Patrol Station in Carlsbad, NM.

Started my first tour in Germany with HHB 1/1 ADA in Butzbach. I was one of the "lucky" one's who helped move the Battalion Headquarters to Wildflecken one truckload at a time. Spent the remainder of that tour in the S1 office in the new HQ building. Left WTA in October 1978 (what I call my short tour) but returned to Germany in 1982. Spent six years (the long tour) in Mannheim. I'm now retired and (still) working for the Army Personnel Command in Alexandria, Virginia.

I haven't been to WTA in at least 15 years so I'd like to thank the webmaster for the great information posted to this site. Thanks and keep up the good work.

This is a GREAT web page! Thank goodness I finally found it. I was the Unit Armorer at CSC 2/15th Inf. The Supply Sergeant was SSgt Moody, the First Sergeant was Tibor Raso (who retired shortly after I was assigned there), the commander was Capt Harrington (I do believe also he PCS'd not long after) and then Capt Alan Smith became commander. I enjoyed my tour at the Rock, after I got settled there. I hope to make it back there some day. Even though it was not close to the big cities, I didn't mind at all. I enjoy the small town atmosphere more than the big cities anyway. Hope to hear from some of the friends I made over there, like David Weisgerber(sp), Don Schwartz, Dan Cole, Doug Mueller, Andy Anderson(Motor Pool section), Leslie Jones,Campos(Recon Plt), Kevin Waters(Como),Dwight LLoyd,(Supply section). Hope to be in touch with some of you. Bye for now.

My God. Ten years later, I can still remember Wildflecken with amazing clarity, the base, the field exercises, the town, the people, my first experience with real German beer, meeting Anette (who has turned out to be more special to me than I could have imagined), trips to Fulda and Frankfurt (and Lohr), dancing and meeting the most friendly Germans at the Grammophone in Gersfeld, everything. Easily the most memorable experience of my life, as evidenced by the above. I couldn't believe it when people came back after getting out for good, but I have to admit, I did the same in 1995. The place has a pull on us sentimental Americans.

Oh, yeah, sitting in that Godforsaken gate shack on the hawk site was a pretty memorable experience, too. I'll never forget the view from that shack - it's burned into my memory. I'm sure anyone who has spent as much time up there can recall that view just as easily. Or perhaps this: "Wake up, someone's coming!"

Has it been ten years since I've left Germany? Doesn't seem possible. It seems like just yesterday. I know I'm not the type who does well with keeping in touch, but if you see this, Bob B., Chris F., or Howie, drop me a line.

Ah, Wildflecken. Pleasant summers, brautwurst, and beer. Tough winters, more brautwurst, and more beer. Hmm, I maybe THAT'S why I moved to Minnesota (smile).

Hey all ya'HAWK-A-MANIACs! Drop the 'last full-time TD on The Hill' a line. I'd love to hear from you!

What can I say about Wildflecken.... It was a wild place. All of you who have been there know what I mean. I met some nice people and would like to hear from anyone who might have been there while I was. I worked in the Dispensary for the majority of the time I was there. Doctor Hector Santos was the Company commander at the time. I'm looking for Sam Kelly, Vance Cast, Jim Franklin. If any of you come see this, write me. I'd love to hear from you guys..

Had some of the best times in my life there, spent too many nights at the Goose, occasionally Zwei Tannen. Hello to all my buds, Kai Kangaroo, Kevin, Siggy, Gabi, and all the rest of the gang. How did I ever leave there alive? :-) Guess I have to thank Simone for that! Somtimes I don't know how I got back up that hill. Still get back on occasion to drink a beer at the Kreuzberg. Und habe Ich auch ein bischen Deutsch gelernt, bin jetzt in El Paso, TX, aber Ich werde immer Wildflecken vermissen. Schoene Gruesse an alle und Gruess Gott.

I was a Ratt Rigger(31C), not a Conehead(as we called the Linguists).
I best remember trying to keep my Sanity and not go crazy and somehow doing just that. No Gut, No Glory. I remember the summer of '87, which was colder and wetter than the Winters I grew up with in San Diego. Being on the list for every Random piss test, they were never random for me or the other Rattriggers as I recall. My Team mates Mac who got tossed out after being busted to e1, and White who as I heard got busted to e1 and tossed out for selling cigs on the blackmarket. Of course there was me, who arrived at Wildfleckin ten pounds over weight and after six months on the fat program was 60 pounds over and getting chaptered out(at least I didn't get busted to e1). I remember Mac telling me everyday that "if you don't lose that weight, they'll send you home, I've seen it happen" and wondering if he meant that as a threat, because it sounded like a promise. All in all there were some good times, but my frame of mind did not let me see them as good at the time. My best memmory was Joy Ponce who as a friend helped keep me sane.

I was at 'flecken only once during my TOD (61-63) and don't remember much about it other than how long the trip took to get from West Berlin to West Germany because the East German Border guards would not let us pass through their final check point and delayed our trip by a couple hours. About al I can remember about Wildflecken was the comfortable barracks we had for our short 2 week stay. I believe that the only reason we went in the first place was to keep that 110 km stretch of autobaun open per our agreement with the 4 powers at the end of WWII.

I am assuming it was used in the Officers Club, but am not sure. I got the set from an antique shop here in Michigan about 7 years ago and was told it had some WWII history. Anything would help. It also has a "Logo" of an archer w/ a bow and arrow, and it was made by wellner silver co. Thanks for any help.

My wife and I were stationed at the WTA from January 1970 to April 1972. She worked at the Education Center as a teacher and then as director. I was assigned to Head & Head as a First Lieutenant. My first assignment was as the Assistant S-3. I was later assigned as the Atomic Demolition Munitions Platoon Leader and NATO site officer. Our first daughter was born in January 1971 at the hospital in Wurzburg and our second daughter was born in March 1972 at the dispensary on post. We loved our tour and often reminisce about the "Wildflecken Years". We saw this site and pulled out our slides. Remember the Waffen Kammer, the Kreutzberg, O'Gau, Fulda, the chicken farm at Steinau, the bratwurst truck on 8-40 going to and coming from Frankfurt, and a few of you might even know about the wax candle artist in the woods...he was hard to find. We could have used a Global Positioning Satellite. Also, remember the $.25 a gallon of gas, $.25 movies, and the $.25 slot machines in the 'O' Club. Back then, the exchange rate was 4 marks to 1 dollar.

Thanks for the site! Found someone I was stationed with 30 years ago.

Our unit was part of operation swift strike. I was only in Wildflecken a short time before we convoyed into Berlin. We were training in preparation to move into Berlin. I remember when our unit arrived, they had to set up beer halls in our barracks because there were too many fights in the E.M. Club. Too many young troops on one post and unit pride. I can still remember the Monastery and the Beer the Monks brewed.

I was the Armorer for Delta 54th. I worked for 1SG Crawford and Captain Condon, before they shut us down and sent us home. I actually photographed the inactivation ceremony on behalf of the battalion. Lots of great memories! I remember NATO sending us to Italy for "extreme cold weather training" and it was warmer there than in Wildflecken!

I'm about to return for a visit between Sept 25th and October 3rd, 2000! Let me know if you want to meet up somewhere (Wildflecken, Oktoberfest, wherever).

I was station in Wildflecken for 2 tours of duty. I truly miss that place for it started my military career. If anyone knows the direct support maintenance shop that supported 54th Engineers, which was located in two places on Wildflecken. (1) across from 54th motorpool (2) across from the schinzetl stand. Here are just a few people I've worked with during those time periods. CW4 Jennings (ret), SSG Cunningham (ret), SFC Curtis Brown (ret), SFC Crawford, SSG Barkley, SSG McDaniel, SSG Pangelinan, SSG Evans, 1SG Oscar Perz Perz, SGT Altman, SSG Crump, SPC Vitko, SPC Dan Miller, SGT Davidson, SFC Macie, just to name a few. If any of you guy remember me place write. I'd love to here from you. Currently I'm back in Germany a third time, but I'm stationed in Vilseck. 54th Engineers are currently in Bamberg, Germany. I have also made alot of friends in that unit as well.

Wildflecken was my only duty station. Living there was an amazing experience. I hated it my 1st year, liked it my second and loved it my third. (Amazing what some rank, a gilfriend and a .50 caliber machine gun can do to a 20 year old's attitude.) I would like to hear from anyone who may remember being in 1/68 with me (even if you weren't man enough to be a stinger :).

Me along with my good buddy Robert Doss loved living it up in good old Wildflecken. I was there from 1981? to 1987-when I graduated from Fulda. Like Rob, I can personally say I've had some of the best beer in my life at the Kreuzberg. I can honestly say I miss the place, of course you never realize it until your looking in the rearview mirror. Anyway-here's my 2 sense for what it's worth.
Thanks Wildflecken

Servus Freunde,
Lived in "WILDCHICKEN" on A Street and loved it. I moved there from Bad Kissingen, went to Wurzburg High school as freshman and did the rest of my high school days in Fulda. You can't beat being a dependent in Germany, it was a total blast. Nothing like a good hike up to the Kreuzburg on the weekend for some real beer. Or going to the Holiday Gasthaus and having a tall Weizen. Then there was always the Disco in Bad Bruckenau.
Hopefully some other dependents will visit this site. I am trying to track down some people if anyone has any knowledge of their location.
Susan Gay (Hand), Lisa Meisner, Andy Farr, Christina Hawk, Doug Brinning, and Steve Luce (Loose?) Steve was in the Engineering company and from California. 54th Engineers.
Steve, sorry I got in trouble with your car but that MPI guy was a prick. Can't spell WIMP without MP.

This is my second posting. I check the Guestbook about once a week to see if any familiar names crop up. So far..no luck.

I went to Wildflecken as an 11B10 grunt in June, 1972 after four months of basic and AIT at Fort Ord, California. There were a lot of laughs from the "permanent party" at Wurzburg when I found out that I would be further reassigned to Wildflecken instead of staying there.

After being reassigned to Company A, 2/15, the Post Adjutant, Captain Kirikos assigned me to HHC, 2/15 so that I could work in the Personnel Office under SFC Robert Suter (because he had all the grunts he needed). I couldn't even type !

After about 1 1/2 years our group was reorganized into a Post Personnel Office under command of a Regional Personnel Center out of Schweinfurt and moved into newly renovated barracks down by Post Headquarters. We then handled all personnel affairs for the entire post. This included in-processing, "cutting orders", emergency leaves, records maintenance, training and we were the ones that scheduled your departure trip back to the "world".

So, if you came into Wildflecken, regardless of unit, anytime from about late 1973 to the end of 1974, you likely were "in-processed" by me.

What I remember most about Wildflecken, unfortunately during that time, were the racial tensions. There were pure lines of color that developed prior to and during that time. There were race "riots" and Wildflecken was once put under "Martial Law" in the summer of 1972. Everyone was confined to barracks while MP's were sent in from somewhere and CID people called in.

In the mess hall, shouts of "Black Power" would shake the walls. No Senior enlisted or officers could (would?) do anything about it. Fights broke out all the time. Many whites were jumped in the bars downtown or walking back from the movies. Funny, one of the guys that I was closest to, and ran around with the most over there was Black, but our unit was a close knit group and things like race and religion, etc. didn't really matter that much. Fortunately, as I was about to ETS, I noticed a slight change in race relations across the post. Things were getting a little better. I think it is strange that I don't see any other entries in the Guestbook about this strange time on the Rock.

Other things I remember were that drugs were available as beer. It didn't matter what you wanted you could get it. Grass was the most expensive at $15 for a matchbox full, although a gram of hash was about the same (I think). Coke and meth were a dime a hit. The smell of burning hash was so think in the barracks, you could get high just walking down the halls. No one writes about this. Wonder why?

I appreciate this site. It brings back so many memories. Driving to Bad Neustadt in the blinding snow, when my wipers gave out and McCain hanging out the window to keep the windshield clear. By the time he got back in the car his "Fro" was white.

Sneaking girls into the barracks. SGT Meyers dressing "Gabby" up in fatigues to sneak her out because they overslept and "Sarge", Cpt. Corcoran and Mr. Northcut had just came in and was wonderng why Myers hadn't fallen out for formation. What a sight !

At that age time goes as slowly as cold sorghum. Two and a half years seemed like a lifetime. Since then, I have had marrages last less time. Funny its only been 5 percent of my entire life. It's also funny that it predominates my memories.

I still communicate with an Rettungs Assistant in Bad Brueckenau and he said the place has really changed since it closed. I'm told the closing had a pretty deepening affect on the local town. Such a shame!!! After the support the city and it's people gave us, we just up and left.

Arrived in April of 63, while the batallion was in the field on maneuvers and was given a 3 day pass to Amsterdam.
Served as Fire Direction Computer for the 81 mm mortars and 106 recoiless rifles. Spent most of my hitch as platoon sergeant and leader of The "Co-Arty Raiders"
as our platoon was known. We were the "aggressors" for almost every unit that trained at Wildflecken. Those were the days when Wildflecken was referred to as the "Dodge City"
of Usareur (? sp). It was averaging a shooting or APC or Tank theft a week. People (usually draftees) wanted off the Hill so badly that jail time meant a trip home and a discharge.
Some of the people I remember...Charlie Brown, Gary Weber, Lt Butler,
Arturo Santos, Porky Gardner (Cal), SSgt Proctor, Tommy Hall, Gregory Van Wyck (NYC), Milton R Beck (Philly). Things I remember...The SNOW,
The coal stoves, KP, NATO guard duty, test firing the AK47's, Stoners, AR15's, Colonel's Orderly competition to get out of pulling guard duty,The Femina Bar, schnitzel sandwiches for breakfast after a night
0f drinking. And the two times we were deployed off the Hill in 3 years we were sent to Hohenfels and Grafenwehr
to work the tank qualification tests. I spent more time in the mud in those 3 years than I have in my entire life.
I went back to wildflecken in Oct of 96 but was not allowed on post, because it was property of the German military and was told in no uncertain terms to turn around and leave, so we went
to what used to beb dependent housing area and was able to take a few pictures of Wildflecken
through the clouds. God, I had a great time there. JD

I've been back to the post twice in the past few years. once in 1991 with my family and ate lunch in the old mess hall.

I spent time exploring the East German border where I did night surveillance with a radar squad. We watched the building of the Iorn curtain. It was done at night with crude tools and lanterns. By day light they were gone and retuned only under darkness. I was almost captured twice as the East Germans were very intereted in our equipment. once during a snowstorm that held us on the border after daylight, and another time on the observation post about 2 a.m. in the morning. We were on a finger of land that surrounded us on three sides and they came up behind us in the woods. Thak goodness the rear guard heard them and then it was confirmed by the tinkle bells in the wire sorrounding our rear position. We loaded equipment quickly and escaped as they rushed us. The men had to kick some out of the rear of out 3/4 ton truck.

My next trip was for the closing of the base. We sat in the base commanders box during the ceremony and I had the time of my life. I felt back on duty again. Pride swelled up inside. The party thrown by the town of Wildflecken in the motor pool was great. Music, food and of course, plenty of beer.

It was tough, serving in those cold war times and the suspense was tremendous. The joke around camp was Ruskie having reveilee one moring with and attack. (we were within range of fire.) We served as an aggressor force for most of the training exercises coming in from the states. This kept us in the field most of the time. Wet, cold, muddy and that made us an enemy to deal with. so very many old war stories and I get to tell them over a beer every so often.

As I look back, Now grey, aged, warm and dry, It was a great experience. I'm very proud to have served and especially in a great place like Wildflecken.

We had a grand time and sent every squad through without a problem. Colonel DePuy visited us toward the end and shared a bottle of Chivas Regal with us in the BOQ. He went on to 4 stars. I remember we had to heat our rooms with a coal fired stove! Somewhere on the back mountain road was a gasthof/truck stop that served the best pea soup I have ever eaten. Those were the days my friends. God Bless

I read with great interest all the little stories in the Widflecken guest book pages. It makes me feel good reading so many nice stories about this beautiful part of Germany. I was born in nearby Bad Kissingen and also have a close connection to Wildflecken. I thought some of you might be interested in my story. I served from 1939 to 1944 in the German army, participating in many battles in France and later in Russia. 1942 I was captured by the Russian army deep in Russia and after a few days in POW.. camp I escaped. When the Normandy invasion started we were sent to France and engaged the seventh U.S. army in battle. In October 1944 I was captured by the U.S. army. In February 1946 the American army discharged us and turned us over to the French army. On July I5 I escaped from this prison camp. After 20 days marching mainly during the night, I arrived at my hometown. In 1948 the U.S. army were looking for former German army personnel, and organized a organization which the called " labor service unit" we had U.S. Army uniforms (Black } M. 1 rifle's and where stationed in U.S. barracks. My company was stationed in Bad Kissingen and later Schweinfurt. At this time the barracks in Wildflecken where occupied by Eastern European refugees. A. organization called
IRO (international Refugee Organization) was responsible for returning those refugees. Most of them did not want to go back which created a problem for the U.S. army who wanted to use Wildflecken as an army camp. They did not wanted to get themselves involved in the process of clearing this area, so they had to bride idea to send us to do the job. I was transferred with my company occupying one small building. Our order was to evacuate and clean out one building a week. We did this with good results , and made room for all you guys having the good time, described in this guest book's. By working all does years very close with American personnel and learning the American way, there was no question in my mind to emigrate at the earliest possible time to these great countrie. Which I did in July of 1953.

I think the Army saw that I was used to 100+ degree summers and sent me to Wildflecken. I've never been so cold before or since. Definitely one of the most beautiful places on earth, I've forgotten most of the bad parts and remember serving with some of the best people in the Intel community. If we'd only had more decent officers we could have actually accomplished something. Anyone remember Caravan Guard 88 when the colonel had us set up in that farmer's manure field?

Wildflecken was my first and only active duty assignment. I loved the countryside, endured the weather and hated the dog and pony BS.
Did a lot of Volkesmarches. Bowled every weekendd. Couldn't wait for someone to drive me to Schweinfurt or Wurzburg so I could get to a "real" PX. Met some of the best people on Earth there, still close to a couple of them.

Spent just 3 months at Wildflecken. We were a part of Operation Swift Strike
Strike. 3 months there for training, and then into Berlin. during that
3 months I only saw 2 females. One was in a band that played at the

the last one was really a female).

Had some great times in Wildflecken...Looking for anyone who was there at that time especially John Gregory, Jr., and Richard D. Sommers. While there we spent alot of times at Mama's bar, the Germany Orphanage, the movies, the bowling alley, and did some skiing, sledding and traveling. We had the guys out to our house for cards and beer! We called Wildflecken "The Hill". It was just a great time and we have many memories.

Just realized my first entry was incorrect. I was a medic with headquarters and can only say times were great. Met many great people that I was stationed with (Mike, Tony, Chris, Scott, Ray, and many many more).
Not long after getting out I went back to bartend at the Rhoen View Officer's Club. The day after starting there my daughter was born. Gave up on making drinks and learned how to pour beer and listen to officer's woes.

I'd love to hear from any of the Medics from 1-68th or folks from the club.

Well, it was the best of times and the worst of times. Moving an understrength battalion's full strength equipment with deuce & halves. Hey, Menzies, Hartwell, Rafferty, Sturgis, & Boyer, we go again in 24 hours! I got a chance to sample Kreuzberg Beer before going to Hungary & Bosnia in 1996. It's still wunderbar! The 'chicken was closed by our allies. The 1-K zone for you Generation Xers had the best bratwurst and beer while shooting the bird to the East German/Soviet Border Guards. HQ's Boyers, Maskovitch, Rammel, Long, Apling, Butler, Kuntz, Grozis. Frideres, Abbott, Hiatt, Stromberg's disco, Fischelschweiger nee Gallop, Martin, Draut, of 'A'... Memories good and bad. Frankenheim was our apartment. Meissner, 11th ACR outposts, Reforger each year (we were good or we were available?), alerts (Who the hell has the motorpool keys?), guard duty at the TCAE, Hey were do you think that tunnel goes? Ich hab mein Herz in Rhön verloren!

Wildflecken, located in the Rhön Mountains, reminded me of northern New England. I made many German friends during my brief stay on “Post”. I still visit family and friends of more then 34 years and counting - Michaela, Patricia, Inge, Günter, Heidi, Anna, Hansi, Gerlinde, Bruno, Eva, Helga, Frau Doris Neisser. I have fond memories of the Mühlengrund, Zum Lamm, Rhönlust Gasthof and others.
A special hello to the patrons of the Scheunbrand in Oberweissenbrunn.
Memories of the good times with friends at the Kruezburg, the Wasserkuppe, and the little towns - from Oberweissenbrunn to Poppenhausen to Bischofsheim an der Rhön will always bring joy to my heart and a smile to my face. Many GI’s cursed the cold and snow and the “foreign speaking natives." They will never know what they missed by their decision to make a choice by staying on Post, refusing to learn at least a little German or hanging out in GI bars.

May the sands of time touch you gently.

Viele Grüße
Dave Renner

I was the supply clerk during my stay at WTA.This was my first duty station therefore I didn't realize just how bad WTA was. But, looking back I don't regret the time I spend there. I always enjoyed the weekly trip to Wurzburg in the back of a duece and a half to get supplies. I was able to get to the Monastery a few times, which was always a good time. Anybody remember Jerry's Keller Bar? I remember going there a lot of times but don't always remember leaving! I have lots of good and not so good memories of WTA and I would really enjoy reminicing about WTA with anyone that contacts me.

It was the worst place a young guy could have been sent to. Sorry I cant lie and tell all kinds of great things about a place that was that cold and secluded. About the only thing it did for me was teach me to live without the many amentities that US duty stations have. Seven elevens and women with bare underarms. I am really surprised at the amount of people that had great times there. Makes me wonder if they remember being woke up at 3am for an alert to the UDP for a week of cold miserable weather. Anyways I for one am happy that our presence was no longer needed there.

I served with in Wildflecken from 9/68 until about 8/69 in HQ S1. In
summer 69 some of us moved to 575th PSC Mannheim Barracks.

In Wildflecken, First, Lt. Bill Rooney and then CW3 Meririot were the
OIC's, Battalion S1 Officers. Joe Miller, Rich Tilly & Rich Tilly &
Ralph Sudustine were in personnel (S1). Butch Drumhiller was HHC Company Clerk. SFC Ralph Brunner was NCO in Charge. A Sgt. McReynolds joined us. LTC D. Duncan Joy was Battalion Commander.

Wildfecken times were not the best times in my life. Some were
miserable but I don't know what I'd trade the time for. Generally we
remarked that Germany was great USAEUR was (politely) not so great.
Enjoyed Nuerenburg, Wurzburg, the Klosterbrauerri, Bishopshine, and the Rod & Gun Club. I came to Wildflecken in 9/68 and I think it was 6/69 before the fog cleared and I realized there was a town in that valley!

In one way Wildflecken for me was a bit different. My great Aunt Mary,
was a Polish DP during WWII. She told me she was part of the work crew
that placed the Belgium blocks which were the paved roads of the post.

Wow, a lot has changed! I haven't seen photos of Wildflecken and
the post in many years. Thanks for taking the time to keep the
memories alive. My 2 years at USMCA Wildflecken were interesting,
if not always wonderful. The US Army is no picnic. Still, I would
probably do it again... If I were 19 again!

I'm hoping to visit the Rhoen area and Wildflecken during my 2 week
vacation trip to Germany in Sept 2000. It will be quite a thrill
to visit the old inter-German border locations, where the fences
and fortifications used to disturb the beautiful landscape...
And just STROLL ACROSS where the Iron Curtain once divided a world!

Anyway, if anyone has a special request in reference to the post,
let me know. I'll do my best.

My Dad, Lowell B. (Barney) Dezarn, was the 54th's CO. I have nothing but great memories about Wildflecken. I was 12 years old when we arrived and really didn't want to leave when my Dad was reassigned to Hanau to become the XO for 37th Engr Grp. My favorite time of year was winter (remember this is from a kid's perspective). My friends and I would ski down the hill from behind the Service Club to State Street (I think that's what it was called). The only problem was that we would have to trudge back up the hill through deep snow carrying heavy skis! I would like to hear from anyone in Mrs. Phillips 6th grade class (64-65).

Comment

Worked as community translator for the regiment and functioned as go-between in our contacts with local military, police, customs, church, and press officials. (In particular, I recall Dr. Dr. Abel, one of the bishop's deputies, who once said to me: "Veni domi nostrae et Latine loquamur.") Went to Wilflecken on temporary assignments, including use of the rifle range. Also went up to the old Kreuzberg to drink the acclaimed dark beer while sharing experiences with others languishing under the impact of the treacherous GI Blues. Once met an NCO of the German Bundeswehr Reserve who told me that in the old days the German soldiers were also extremely unenchanted about the merciless winter weather in the area. One of their sayings, a rhyme, may be translated as follows: "It is better to have the buttocks full of thumbtacks than to do a tour at Wildflecken." ("Besser den Hintern voller Reisszwecken, als einmal nach Wildflecken").

Since 1995 I have been visiting Fulda and the Wildflecken area regularly each summer. The scenery is still as charming as ever, and the quaint villages perched amidst the hilly landscape have retained their exquisite character, esp. Oberwildflecken, Oberweissenbrunn, and Haselbach. Some of our fellow-veterans may remember the pub ZUM MUEHLENGRUND at Oberweissenbrunn, just below the Arnsberg, where I have hoisted many a glasses in the honor of our unit and the glitz of the local village beauties. But even places farther afield, e.g. Gersfeld, Ostheim, or Heustreu (where there used to be nice discotheques) have not lost one iota of their attractive features. It goes without saying that I also often visit the Wasserkuppe where the gliders roam the skies somewhat more freely now, owing to the absence of the border.

An interesting experience is visiting the former East German border villages in the area, e.g. Vacha, Geisa, Wiesenfeld, Frankenheim, Birx, Melpers, Henneberg, etc. During the Cold War one could only glimpse at them either from the helicopter or through binoculars. Rapid progress appears to have been made there on many fronts, including roads, restaurants, and hotels, e.g. Eisenacher Haus, near Frankenheim, or Katzenstein, near Theobaldshof/Andenhausen.

If you are interested in sharing your recent travel experiences of these beautiful places, I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

I cant belive that Wildflecken was/is so popular that it has its own web page. You know I hatted it when I was there but missed the hell out of it when I left. I was one of the last to leave when they deacttavated 1/68 in 89,90, and by that time most everyone I knew had left for the gulf. So if there is any scouts out there, send me an e-maile, I would like to hear from you.

Found the site when surfing the web today. Brought back old memories
of good times in Germany. Lived at 61 State Street near the main
entrance in one of the old German Army officer quarters. I was a
Staff Sergeant and worked first on the tactical site of 1-1 ADA for
about a year. Then I moved down to the Headquarters and worked on the
commander's staff for the remainder of my tour tracking readiness of
the I-HAWK missile and other tactical systems.
Enjoyed my time in Germany and was able to take many in country
tours and shopping tours to Weisbaden and Rhein-Main. Hope to return
some day and see if the cobblestones are still in good repair.

I worked as a cook in the 54th engineers mess hall and one of my first memories is when SSGT.Rick Ghizzone drove me,during a snow storm,to where I was going to be staying and asked if I ever heard of"when hell freezes over".I said yes and he said welcome to hell.I realized he wasn't kidding when it was still snowing a couple days later.I also thought my name was changed to mother fu..er when i met SFC.Floyd. Whenever he was around and he asked me to do something he would say"mother fu..er go do this".He turned out to be one of the coolest people I knew.Who else could take off on a plane flight to go to a bowling tournament without putting in for leave and come back and not get in any trouble. If you remember me and if you want to send an e-mail feel free.If anyone knows the location of Eric Flemming or Corey Majors send me their address or phone number.

I am surprised to see all who actually miss this place... including
me. It was a terrific place to live and work, even if you spent
most your time in the field at the Chicken, Graf or CMTC. Beautiful
country in the Rhon. I used to live in Bicshofshiem. Unfortunately
my unit reflagged with the 1st Armored Div after Desert Storm and we
had to move to Dexheim (South of Mainz). Wildflecken was a great first assignment... a bit remote at times.. but fun. I especially
miss the Kreuzberg beer. I'll be back some day to visit. Hopefully
they allow past alumni on to whatever it is WTA does today.

Pulled a lot of gate guard duty there. 24 on, 24 off for most of my time. cross country skied all over the place. Some days it was the only way down from the "tit" as we called our emplacement. Stuck up there for a week getting interrogated with everyone else because some stupid ripped the guts out of all the radars and comm trucks...Winter for most of the year; no fall, summer for maybe a day or two it seemed. Lots of people shooting up in their rooms, in the bunkers during Tac Eval, etc...Watched lots of people, commisioned and non, get in lots of trouble. Saw more hashish than I've ever seen since. Found out after a year or so of beer in the barracks that there was lots to do, especially if you learned the language. I did...Started having a real good time, almost re-up'd. Too bad I wasted a year. (it was fun, but in retrospect it was a waste of a year being a barracks rat with everyone else). Good thing the army forced us to go on trips to the ski area, Rothenburg, Munich. It started the ball rolling for me and my roommates. I was an MP, they were motorhunds. We still stay in touch and meet every few years.

I remember talking to the librarian about Wildflecken during the war and afterward. She told me that in 1944 all the local kids 14 yrs. and
older were taken to "Himmler Platz" (the field in front of the Service Club) and sworn into the SS. I guess I know why now. Very interesting to see pics from the earliest days of the post. I also now know what we were walking through when we went cross country to Kreuzberg. I'd still like to contact Don Saunders, Dennis McCullough,
and the women who worked at the Service Club (Barb and Sue, I think.)

I enjoyed my time at Wildflecken. I still remember trips to the
Green Goose, Zwie Tannen, Kreuzberg and Ostheim. It seems like a
lifetime ago, I had many close friends I lost track of. If you remember
me send me an email and we'll talk about old times.

Hi friends,
I loved Wildflecken very much. It was the best time I had in the Army in my 8 years of service. I meet some of the best people in the world there. I also meet the love of my life there. My family and I went back there for vacation in July of 1999. The post has been turned over to the German Army. There are no American's there anymore. It is just not the same as it use to be. It was kind of sad to see it so different. It was like a whole different place.
But, I got to see alot of old German and had a great time with them.
They said themselves that it is not the same wothout the American's there. But, I would trade the time I spent there for nothing in the world. Thank you Wildflecken for the time of a lifetime.

Some of us had the chance to meet during the annual

the wonderful times we had, working there.
I won't be able to participate in our gatherings for a

What a pleasure it is to see all those great comments about Wildflecken, and some names that I recognise! For me too, it was one of the best experiences of my life, we truly enjoyed our time in Wildflecken, and were very sorry to have to leave when the base drew down to a closure. We made some good friends over there, and sadly lost touch with most of them when we moved back to England. I think that I may still have some good fiends living in Wildflecken -Chris, Sonja & family - Glasper James ? - are you still out there ?

I would really love to hear from anybody out there who may remember us, did I sell you your car? You remember the car lot - next to the AAFES garage? Your e-mails would be appreciated ! (no hate mail please!)

Loved the German countryside. When the BDE driver dropped me off at BN HQ, he apologized for taking me to WTA. I looked around and said, "Man, you took me home. Crawling through Germany site - thinking of a visit to Germany - Amazed to find WTA still in US hands.

At the time I was at Wildflecken the Major US tenant was the 1/50th Inf - 3rd Inf Div. Also there was the 54th Eng Bn which had a special mission of keeping the road to Wasserkuppe open; and an ADA unit who's designator I don't recall which operated Hawk missiles at a nearby site. Also on base was a German Basic Training facility.

In 1983-85, I was retired and in Europe as a techrep for RCA supporting the AN/TSQ-130(V) TCAC system. One of the users was the 108th CEWI Bn of the 8th ID and I made many visits to Wildflecken to support that unit.

Please don't report me to the Forestmeister but through ignorance at Christmas of 1962, I cut down a pine for a Christmas tree.

Three of the best years of my life. Worked in the MWR graphics/design office with Dianna Whitaker, did several plays and met many people who are still among my closest friends: Victoria Amador, Kat'leen Fanelli, Dave Pecarovich, Bonnie Gushard, Jack Sweet, Jos Hoes, Lonnie Tague, et al. What a great time and what a beautiful post. Some of you may remember me as the guy who used to walk around reading a book. I still do it, and I haven't tripped yet! Thanks to the person who maintains this site! It's excellent.

we were a wasserkuppe air force family, but our lives revolved around the facilities, school, and wonderful friends we made at wildflecken. we lived in the bundeswehr housing in gersfeld, and margie and john attended school at wildflecken. anybody remember ms. laluserne or ms guisinger? john was in cub scouts at wildflecken and through that we met such nice people like the avery's, the sykes, the spooners. probably the best time we had in our military lives. and such a beautiful place to live. what memories. i especially remember riding the commissary bus every thursday through every little town-going to the commissary on the big day out. lol would love to talk to anyone with the same memories.

I was an army brat and lived in the "little Manhattan" military housing apartments off the base. My dad was SSGT John Casiano of the 2/15 Infantry on "top of the rock" I was a disc jockey at the Club called O.P.'s which was down the hill from the military housing. I was dating a girl named Maria Brooks at the time and her brother was stationed on the rock also. I believe his name was Bobby McGee. I believe he transferred to 181st Airborne Unit or to that base between 1982 and 1986. I went to visit him and Maria at the time and left early from my visit because of a misunderstanding with Maria. I wanted to apologize to her but lost contact and it still bothers me that I was not able to do so. I also had 3 sisters named Laura, Maria, and Sonia who lived with my parents and I in the military housing. Anyone who might know me or know how I can contact Maria Brooks e-mail ASAP. I will never forget the memories of Wildflecken and the great beer there and at the monistary.

FATHER WAS IN THE AIR FORCE STATIOINED AT THE WAUSEKUPPE

Comment

I lived in the town of Gersfeld as my father was stationed at the Wausekuppe in the US Air Force. As I remember it there were about seven or so of us American kids that lived in Gersfeld and we went to school on the Wildflecken Post. As a light snow is falling here in Delaware and schools are canceled due to an inch of snow I recall very vividly our school bus making it thru FEET oF snow to get us to school at Wildflecken. A foot of snow was nothing there and I remember the sound of the school bus tires with chains and studs clanking and grinding over snow to get us to school. Although I was very young I still have fond memories of Gershfeld and Wildflecken. I have actually met up with a fellow student from Wildflecken and she is a Delaware state trooper now. Her name was Chris Lapp and she was my neighbor in Gershfeld. Does anyone remember Ms Guisinger from the school on Wildflecken?? I would really like to somehow contact her. If anyone has any storys about going to school there in Wildflecken or know anything about the wherabouts of Ms Guisinger I would love to hear from you!

I had the opportunity to go to Wildflecken on January 11,2000. I stayed in Bad Bruckenau for two nights at a gasthaus in the middle of town. I got onto post and had permission to drive around, it was very sad. There were only a few buildings being used by the German Army. Housing areas that once had many childern were empty, PX gone and motor pools without vehicles. It brought back old memories from my three year tour in WFL. On the other hand the beer at the Kruezburg was as good if not better then ever! Bad Bruckenau's down town area has a new traffic pattern that makes main strasse open for foot traffic only. The Polizei have a beautiful new building at the end of town. Gershfeld, Bischofsheim & Langenleiten looked the same and the pizza place near main gate is still there. I was happy to have the opportunity to see this very cold place again.....especially the Kruezburg!!

Spent over half of my 20 years in the Army in Wildflecken. Played soccer for 10 years and have more friends in Bad Brueckenau and the surrounding area than any other place. Enjoyed the Infantry (what else is there?) and my tours of duty very much.

I was the lieutenant in charge of the finance detachment from about 87 to 89. Departed Germany from Wildflecken at the end of my tour and returned to the states for the Officer Advanced Course.

After several more tours I left active duty in 95 and joined the reserves. Five months later I served 9 months with my unit in support of OJE, in Kaiserslautern, GE.

My company was sent to Wildflecken to do road improvement work from the Kaserne to the top of the mountain where the Hawk missle site was located. We stayed in company tents located near the worksite. It was so rainy and windy one night, the big tent poles snapped and the tent collapsed on everyone. No one hurt badly. What a sight. Everyone running around in their wet underwear; their sleeping bag in one arm and their now wet clothes in the other looking for a truck to climb into to get out of the weather and get some sleep. For once I was glad to get back to the barracks at Eschborn. I can only imagine what it was like in the winter. I loved the town and the people but that post was something else. Auf Weidersein.
