To all my Friends. I remember lots of you and your names and some names that I forgot but remembering, Raines, Admondson, SGT Bailey,
Smitty or Spanky, Speir, Capt Hatfield, Cosme, Rosa, Cormier, SSG Rabon, SGT Reyes, MSG Yepes or Top, Heylick.
Hey guys remember the cold days in the motorpool or that crazy 1st Sgt
that we had, that smashed the Medic's head and stoled the company flag. I forgot his name, he was so mean that I never really got to look at his name tag. No kidding guys we had great times, but the worst too. Surviving 2nd of the 15th at those times was tough. To all the cooks and Mechanics and especially the Welder that I also forgot his name love you all bro's.

What a find when I ran across this website. It just brought back all the fond memories of my short stint in Wildflecken. The weather was great, the food was awesome (as long as it wasn't from the mess hall) and the German beer was fabulous. I still remember walking the hills around the post and the nasty climb down to town on those God awful cobble stone pathways. But it was always worth it. The times I could get away from the post to go to Fulda, Wurzburg, Bad Neustadt and Frankfurt were awesome. I'm just glad I got out of there before the weather got too bad. I still remember leaving Wildflecken after getting done with a 2 week bivouac and riding back to base in the back of a deuce and a half during a snowstorm huddled together with my company buds to stay warm. What a sight, five guys clutched together and covered with a 40 man tent to stay warm. ~laughing~ What an awesome time I had there.

Just came on this great site. So many memories it's hard to know where to start. I remember getting off the troop train in Jossa with only two others, both who were going to the 3rd ARB, 50th Inf. An E-5 on the train had told us we'd be sorry we ever heard of Wildflecken. He was wrong. There were great memories for me, along with a few bad, but the bad ones were my own doing. That's another story. There were only 10 or 11 MP's there when I arrived. A first Lt, a cpl, and the rest SP4, PFC, and Pvt's. We lived on the 2nd fl of the PostOffice, with 3 or 4 APU guys on the third fl.

It was a beautiful place, but those winter months were something. Guys from the 50thInf and 54th Engineers can tell that better than me.
Being in the MP's had its perks. No curfew for one thing. I remember the Famiina Bar, The Atlantic, Spang's, The wurzburger hof, Wolfgang's, the Barnhof, and others. About 6 of the guys were married and lived off post. They were all married to German girls.

I was just an amazing time for me, and I'll always have good memories of the hill. I worked with Heinz Giessen, a german interpator, and quite a guy. He spoke English with a British accent, and also spoke Russian. Heinz and I tipped many a glass together. Some of the guys I would love to hear from are Tom Talamantes, Richie Cannara, Tommy Caslander, Odie Hollis, Jack "Charlie" Brown, John Barbara, Joe Bagnato, Eddie Went, Gus Williams, Mid Harmon (who I did see a few years back), and many others. And of course Lt Bruce Welch.

I was with Bravo company and actually lived with our mascot boxer "Bravo". Anyone know how long he lived past 1980. What a great dog! Also roomed with Jasper and before that Abbott. A couple years ago I spoke with Jasper but he is the only one I have talked to in all these years. Lots and lots of memories. Anyone hear from Happney, Abbott, Jarmen, Rosebud, Kimi from Jerry's Keller Bar, Johnson, Connie M.,Russell..... the list goes on. I look forward to hearing from anyone that remembers our times in Wildflecken together. Hope to hear from you soon. Regards

I served as an assistant gunner, gunner and FDC on an 81mm Mortar.
It was kind of lonely being stationed there. I enjoyed being in the
mortar platoon. I had originally enlisted in the straight infantry,
somehow I ended up in heavy weapons (thank God!). I remember it being
very lonely there, with very few friends and no female friends!
My claim to fame was that I recieved a maximum score on the gunner's
test. I was the only one in the battalion to do this. I achieved
this shortly after being court-martialed for sleeping on guard duty,
which prompted the company commander to say "how come all of my f***ups
get good scores on the gunner's test?". I was also TDY on the pistol
team for a couple of months. This was really good duty, except all
of my platoon members were jealous!!

I would like to hear from some of my old buddies: John C. Fullop,
Istvan Szabo, Dennis Brezinski, Doyle Cardwell, Sam Combs.

i used to spend my summer vacations in wildflecken in the 70's. my aunt lives across from the main road that leads up to the rock. this place always fascinated me so much. my dad came here as a fugitive from the east in '44. he told me all those stories about elvis and the gi's going pretty much berzerk on payday after two weeks of bivouacking in minus degrees. in order to make some money he would sneak up to the shooting ranges and grab the still hot brass casings, and sell them as scrap metal. the mp's right on their heels of course...but they never caught him, they knew the forrest better than anybody. he told me about winters so cold, the trees would actually burst. and later when the first guys came back from the nam, how messed up they were, when they got back...
well, i was a little boy back then in the 70's and i couldn't comprehend, why there was a 'little america' in those bavarian backwoods, with black kids on plastic dragsters and these huge cars.
six years ago, i finally made it on post. my cousin used to work on base for a couple of years, she knows how to get in there :)
it was pretty quiet up there. nothing left of the day and night activity, tanks rolling, flares going up at night...instead grass and weeds taking over, but still signs everywhere of the people who used to live there just a couple of years ago. i was wondering, how many people must have lived here throughout the years, so far from home, being sad on christmas to be away from their families or being happy that their families could be there. it's a little bit like a ghosttown, although i was never on post before it was a trip down memory lane for me as well, since my dad spent his youth here.

now i live in california, married, with a great baby boy, who will be president one day. the seeds for that have been thrown back then in wildflecken, when i first encountered this small america in the bavarian backwoods....

This is my 3rd. signing of the WFL guestbook! I was there a very long time and never had so much fun in my life! You loved it, you hated it.. but you always remembered Wildflecken and all the people who you worked with - I'd give a lot to see that post re-opened and active again. My honey William and I went on a nostalgia trip about 2 months ago and they would not allow us on post. I cried for a half hour . I wanted William to see the place.. It was so strange being there and not being able to get on the post.

I am in Darmstadt now with the 233rd. Doing the thing I like best! Theatre - took a little downgrade to get back to Germany and it isn't quite the same, but it is still fun and I wouldn't trade living in Europe for anything!

For all those who remember me and the Great Theatre, G/A fest, and other MWR events - Drop me a line! I was the Entertainment Branch Chief there for years, Then the Marketing Division chief AND CRD chief for a bit before the place closed...I miss it.. I miss my pals and I miss the ambience.. Darmstadt is nice, My Job is wonderful, But nothing has ever beat those special times at the "Top of the Rock"!

Sometime ago I wrote in the guestbook that Virgil was looking for Norman Barron and others he served with in Germany. We did find Norman and they had a very nice reunion. I'm sorry to have to advise anyone who recognizes his name that Virgil passed away on July 27, 2002 - after three months in intensive care. He very much enjoyed his time at Wildflecken and getting back with Norman was a highlight in his life. He loved to tell stories about his days in the service.

Had a great time there. Spent two winters, Felt right at home, as I was raised in the foothill of the blueridge mountains of Virginia, I was use to the snow and hills. Spent a lot of time at the Gausthause Spang. They had some great snitzels, drank a lot of the local beer. Vanderburg,Shannon, sgt koehler, walker Hibbard,Lattin,Woodall,Dunham,Allen. Just arrived home to Minneapolis from 3 weeks in Europe and the highlight was a return to Wildflecken after being gone for 36 years.
People, I want to tell you it was more beautiful than my memories or pictures could portray. My wife and I stayed at the Wurzburger-Hof for three nights and the current owners Evelyn & Werner made us feel right at home. Terrific couple, and Werner's cooking is unmatched. If any of you should return to Wildflecken for a visit, I highly recommend staying here!
I would like to thank Heinz Leitsch, who is the creator of this Web-Site, for taking the time and energy of getting my wife and I passes to allow us on Post and for giving us a guided tour. Heinz also set up a time with Adolph, who has created a historical museum of Wildflecken Post of photos and artifacts, this one hour tour with Adolph will never be forgotten. Nor will our lunch at the officer/nco club [ the Rod & Gun Club site ] with Heinz!!
Although it is sad that the U.S. Army is no longer there and that the Post is just a shadow of what it once was, it still was wonderful to return. Many thanks to you Heinz!

Hello
To those of you that remember me, I worked at the Central Accounting Division. A dear friend of ours, Charlie Peterson, has died. Charlie was an auditor from V Corps, who regularly visited the Wildflecken community and had many friends on the base.
I have not been in touch with any people from Wildflecken, but I wanted those people who knew Charlie to know of his passing. Charlie died tragically, along with his pets, in a house fire on 9/11/2002.
He was a wonderful, kind-hearted, giving person and I will always remember him. I hope you will too.

Thank You
Susan Edwards

I was at Wildflecken twice in the early 60's with the 1st Inf. Div. on training missions(Operation Long Thrust IV and V).
Being a city boy and used to seeing only about 3 inches of dirty
snow on the ground.
, I found it to be a very beautiful place. The mountain top, valley and the view were out of this world. The towns people were very friendly and kind to us. I wish I could go back for a visit some day.
If I were permanent party stationed ther ,then maybe I would have thought differently. I was only there for 4 months and then the second time for 7 months, and loved every minute of it!!!

Chester'Your so full of shit I bet your eyes are brown. You get on this site for the first time and start running your mouth about {I can't stand it anymore}, saying you take offense to people calling Wildflecken the rock and when you get called on it you start backstepping, and shitmouthing.uuuuh I meant this and I meant that,What started it was your mouth.Go back and read all the messages starting with the one before yours shit for brains,You don't have the right to take offense to anything about Wildflecken, being called the Rock or not.You huff and puff but the worst times I had was always because some 2/15 grunt had got drunk and got in afight with some german[usually a teenager] and everyone was restricted to base or for us tac-site.Or another one had gotten feeling guilty for living with a female from another unit[guess whitch one]so he calls his wife stateside and confesses his transgressions hangsup and promptly but not very efficently cuts the females throat.I spent a week guarding that freak.Or maybe the drunk 2/15 [can do soldier] that staggered up to my car when i was going back up the hill one morning after my whole 24hrs off and kicked the side of my car in,And because Ikicked his ass,his C.o.wouldn't make him pay for it.Or maybe it was the 2/15 [can do]soldier that stabbed the teenaged german boy to death in a druken brawl leaving his graduation party and scarred up his friend also german also a teenager.Or maybe i just don't like you chester. I think you were, are, and always will be a punk ass bitch. You get called out on something and you backstep, doubletalk and whine to others I don't know what this guy Buds problem is...You`re my problem chester you and all the other stupid assed grunts that made every duty station Ihad for 6years freakin miserable,You Chester you and the punk ass can do 2/15 soldier that raped the german girl [16yrs old] while I was there,I had to guard him too,but not from escaping ,from the Americans.Every thing bad we had to deal with not living conditions or any thing that trivial, but bad relations with the germans, restrictions curfews, anything really bad had a 2/15 thank you note attached So suck a big green one Chester.

Maybe some of you can explain it to me , but I just don't understand what this guy BUD is so pissed about. My whole statement is about how hard the Wildflecken was on everyone there. And it should be held to a higher standard than being called a rock. But he seems like he spent way too much time "smoking" or drunk to see what "The Sprit of Wildflecken" is all about. It was held to a higher standard then and should be now. The only thing he knows who was "higher" on the mountain. Now if you were living and working under those conditions back in 79 /82 your bitch needs to be with the dumb shit you had has a commander or the NCO's you had for not taking care your needs. But then again maybe you were the dumb shit for putting up with it. After all any dumb ass animal would know when it time to come out of the rain, if he didn't need to be there. And Ken I was in the weapons platoon I was in the motar section (11C), and we did have some good competitions with the other Motar squads from the Battalion some we won and some we lost but when it come to it the 2/15 motors sections was always near the top in the Bde and the Div. maybe all those nights on the ranges firing illumination rounds for the tankers, helped after all. Do you remember The New Bn CDR's "open door policy"........what a joke that was?

Chester Han-2-cock Wah! Wah! Freakin' Wah! You can talk all the trash you want on the web big guy, but if you were there & paid attention you would know B1/1 was a grunt MP duty station. The only time I was downtown was usually with some real 2/15 grunts, busting some wanna be grunts. BUSTIN' THEM IN THE HEADS! Either grunts, armor or other MPS, or whoever ran their mouths. It didn't matter if you were infantry, a truck driver or a cook, but if lived & worked on the Rock you didn't listen to crowing of the wanna be's on your time off because time off was too precious to waste listening to a bunch of wanna be's. You're talking about radio & stupid crap. What were you a clerk? I'm talking about living 24 hrs out of every 48 in combat ready conditions, eating c-rats for three meals out of every six, sleeping (when you got to sleep) on a concrete floor, or if you lucky you got to spend your one to two hrs of sleep on a canvas cot. Not whenever you commander got a hair up his butt or when all the brass were there for reforger. We did it every day (at least every other day). MPS, cooks, truck drivers, blacks, whites, mexican, etc. because we had to. That cat you dissed would be serving your hot meal of the week or he would be driving your mail to the rear (by the way, that is where you lived Chester!) or he would be working on your jeep you drove year round on top of the mountains you looked up at and talked about how cold it was going to be waiting on a cab downtown that night. Don't try to P--- down my back and tell me it's raining, supersoldier. I know how you lived and what you did for a job. Hell, I even know who cooked your meals while you were there. So don't try to blow your chest out and get self-righteous for the people who read this. They know to if they were there.

Professor Loar, you sound like the grunts I served with. I would be inclined to believe you might have been one of those guys I stopped and shared the relative warmth of my jeep, coffee and, dare I say it...my smoke with while you were getting a taste of the Hawk that blew on Top of the Rock. I wish I could say I had never met a grunt I didn't like but, unfortunately, because of loudmouths like Chester Han-2-cock I can't say that. But, I can say I met a few true grunts that took whatever the Fleckin' threw and stayed the same. One was the best man at my wedding, Sgt. Steve Everhart, who got his taste of standing A-hole deep in snow and getting forgotten because his relief was hung-over and sick. Sounds like Professor Loar got a taste of the same. Although, you are awfully calm and quiet spoken for a fellow Texan. Simple fact is Chester, you had sham duty compared to us and, by the way, I think I mentioned I was an MP, not a Hawker. I couldn't even turn one of those puppies on. But nobody ever penetrated our perimeter, friendly or otherwise, exercise or otherwise. But I don't expect you to know this because you weren't even aware of what went on around you, unless it was a full blown alert or a game such as reforger. It didn't matter to you guys. By the way, the only grunts or otherwise, can-do or no-can-do soldier that saw fit to interrupt my personal time off downtown ended up at the dispensary not the brig, because like I said time off was too precious and you had so little of it to spend enjoying the beautiful people and culture around us to waste one more second of it on people like you. We usually just knocked them out and went on about our business. Later Professor. Maybe I will hear from you.

One thing the army taught me is that competition is necessary but it is very important to know what team you are on. When squads compete, all other squads aren’t worth a hill of beans and that competition may come to blows, but you can put those same squads together and they will compete just as vigorously with the highest level of camaraderie in a platoon competition. The same goes for a company competition, battalion, division as well as competitions between posts all the way to the Army/Navy football game. My state can beat your state and let’s not get into countries right now. For the sake of our beloved webmasters, who I’m sure are not looking for a remote prize-fight (unless they have some web based Pay-per-view opportunity that we are not privy to) between 1/1st and 2/15th let’s agree that you either loved being in ‘Flecken or you hated it.
Bud, I never met an MP I didn’t like, then again I don’t remember meeting many MPs, probably because I didn’t spend much quality time in town getting drunk. But I know some did, which probably means you were able to meet and remember many grunts. I am grateful to the 1/1 and hold them in high regard for doing their job and doing it well.
Chester, you were in Bravo at the same time I was in Charlie company. Didn’t y’all kick our butts at something. Feel free to refresh my memory. And you are so right about the way people looked when they spoke of Wildflecken.
As my final word, I didn’t appreciate Wildflecken, (the people or the place) until I had to leave it. The Army there seemed a lot more real than the Army stateside. I was stationed in Fort Hood and even with it’s close proximity to my home, I longed to go back to Germany.

Hey "Bud" first I never tried to give you a lesson in history. If you are so dumb and could
not see the true meaning of my comments a lesson in history would never get though to
your thick skull anyway. The comment I made was we should not put Wildflecken into the same category as all the other places in Germany called the rock. Wildflecken is above them all ( That's Wildflecken is above them all and not just one unit). We all should have some more pride about Wildflecken because we all passed the test. When other soldiers stationed elsewhere; would talk about Wildflecken you could see the fear in their eyes and the respect they had for the place we called home and could not wait to get back to. Now if you can't see or understand that maybe you have yet to recover from the "ASS KICKING" you got from that "Can Do Soldier".(2nd Bn 15th Infantry Grunt). Now for the history lesson if you were there from 79 to 82 you were there during the good times. Now I can have some appreciation for those that came before me. The curfew; no one allowed downtown passed midnight (Opps except for your bothers at the MP station), and only AFRTS Radio, some TV but not much. Now I know that is more than the guys before me had, and I do understand that. So when you what to talk about having it hard don’t cry to me or them. Also you must not have done such a great job on guard duty you could not keep the “rats” from eat the wires so your damn “Hawks” cause they would never have fired anyway.

I guess our history professor got his head out of his butt long enough to remember that whenever he wasn't giving history lessons to do a little current events research & remember whenever he looked up there were mountains above him, and Guess what? pardner, that's where we lived. And Rest Assured, no grunts were looking at us unless they were looking up, way up. Or maybe our history professor remembers a little mountain named Eierhauc. And if he had took the time to notice there were people there besides grunts, ie; 1/68 armour & 32nd ADCOM & 536th MP Co, etc. And the grunts had it better than any of us. They also lived on WTA Kassern Proper, which was on the Rock, admittedly, but a long way from the top of it. The whole time I was there all I heard was 2/15 this, 2/15 that, and all you did was lay around and stay drunk downtown. We were the ones working 24 on 24 off dealing with the HAWK on TOP OF THE ROCK! So I have no patience for a loud mouth grunt now. I put up with it for 2 yrs and I won't listen to it 20 yrs later. Memories fade with time, and I take no real offense in the fact that someone may not remember seeing any GRUNTS on TOP OF THE ROCK. Rest assure that the GRUNTS saw you. I won't presume to give a history lesson about the 3rd Infantry Division "THE ROCK OF THE MARNE". With today's world wide web, if you are really interested, you can find it. The hawk that I most remember was the one that blew through the best cold weather gear and the walk up "THE HILL". I hope that no offense is taken by my comments. Remember, we were all there.

Maybe I didn't make it clear but what I was saying that wildflecken itself was the top of the rock out of all the places in germany where the GI's called home. But we (all) that were stationed there should take pride in the fact that we had the honor of being at the top of all the rocks in germany. And not just my unit.

I take offense, however slight,to 2/15 calling their home The Top of the Rock when everyone knows the Hawk only really blew on the ADA tac-site. And I saw alot of Hawkers [as in Hawk Missle operators],Generator-Hundes[and they all know we meant that lovingly],Motor poole wrenches, and us guarding it 24 on 24 off.And of course the Germans who lived even higher on the tip-top of the Rock.....But try as I might...I don't remember any 2/15...or for that matter ANY grunts on TOP OF THE ROCK.. During my tour alot of places were called the rock. In my unit it was known as "THE TOP OF THE ROCK". We proclaimed the name upon our own rock at the front gate, as a matter of fact ours was the first one you saw as you came in the gate, to welcome you home. If you were lucky enough to there when the best Infantry Battalion in the 3rd Infantry Division was there protecting the line at the "Top of the Rock"

Passing through the Wildflecken area often and occasionally reading this guestbook brings back so many memories that I feel compelled to write at last. I cannot believe it has been so long since we had to leave "the hill" because of the base closure. Wildflecken was a place you either hated or loved, but - judging from the entries in this guestbook - it seems like no one was completely indifferent to it. Being a nature lover myself, I enjoyed every season, from the masses of snow (that some of you hated so much) to wonderful summer days and especially the view of the Kreuzberg from my office window. At times the sun was shining brightly on post, but the valleys below were foggy or cloudy. Then it was like sitting on top of the world.
But what made Wildflecken most memorable to me were the people. Many wonderful and interesting people crossed my path there, some not so nice ones, too. And although I lost touch with all but a few, none will be forgotten for what I learned through them and the impact some had on my life. My time in Wildflecken was something I would not want to miss for anything in the world.
Greetings to all of you out there who remember "the best kept secret".

What a wild and crazy 2 years at "the rock". I met some awesome people while I was there. Got shot at by Iraqis, froze in the field fixing all the wheeled vehicles, got "free trips" to Turkey, England, and Italy (as NATO), had weekly bar fights with Rob at the NCO club and Bad Bruckenau club, got drunk 24-7 at various locations in Deutschland and just had a great time. I forgot more than I remember...lol
Would love the hear from anybody from back in the day. There are just too many friends to list them all.... Louis "Rob" Robertson, Gary Sefton, Kent "Scrave" Cristen, Everett Johnson, George McAllister, SSG Hector Salazar, Mahaffey, Bob Snowberger, and many, many more. Did not realize how good we had it in Wildwflecken until years later.
keep up the great job with the website. I would love to hear from anyone that I spent time with over there.

Iwas a cook and loved and hated Wildflecken. I still think it was my best duty station. Would like to hear from any and all. I wonder what the economy is like there now. I know some Germans didnt like us too much. I wonder how they feel now?

When I arrived at the train station and looked up the hill I said
to my self "what am I getting into", well my stay at Wildflecken was bitter sweet. I had some good times and some bad times, but mostly it was cold. We spent a lot of time at the EM club when we were not out in the field training, which was a lot of time for both. We trained a lot by running from our billets to the front gate around through the back gate to our billets. When I left Wildflecken I returned to Fort Knox Kentucky for 18 months then I reenlisted and went back to Bamberg Germany with Troop 'C' 7th US Calvery serving there from 1959 until 1963 returning to Fort Hood Texas until I was discharged the 6th of June 1965.

I drove a duce1/2 for the mess hall most of the time, plus ammo, supplies, etc, etc. I'm 6'2" blonde hair, if that helps anyone to remember me. I used to go down in the woods around "THE ROCK" boy there was all kinds of stuff down there, half tracks, M-113s,old brick buildings, and large granite marker stones, if someone could tell me what they said you sure would satisfy a long time wonder of mine! I also enjoyed driving my army truck all over Germany, man I had a blast. also did anyone go over to the monistary to drink beer. i used to take the train (to cool) to visit my brother in Aschaffenburg, We had a great time. I'd love to hear from bear(you know who you are.and my roommate Alkolt and mike (your mom had an apartment down at the bottom of "THE HILL" FUNNY I MISS WILDFLECKEN NOW, BUT I DIDN'T MISS IT THEN.

My ex-husband and I were in Wildflecken and your web-site brought back a lot of good memories. Our son was born in Wurzburg in August 1969. We lived on the economy on BishofshiemStrasse. My memories are of walks every day, no matter the weather. Used an umbrella even in the winter to ward off the snow. The army bus that traveled 3 times a week up and down the valley to take us wives and dependents 'up' on base. We would spend the whole day, first stop, the dispensary, then on the commissary, then back to base to the bx and the snack bar where we would meet our husbands for an American cheeseburger and fries.Other unforgettable moments were of "Little Paradise Theater" and "the HAWK" as everyelse has been talking about. Also even though I grew up where we have some snow every winter, some of the most beautiful snow I ever saw falling from the sky was in good old Wildflecken. I also remember the dishes in the cabinets rattling when the tanks rolled into town, the train coming up the hill (it took almost all day), and the guns firing across the valley when the 3rd Herd came to town. One of the things which was hard to get used to was the church bells, but I missed them the most. Hello to any of the gals from the 144th Ord. Wives Club from my time period. Would love to hear from any of you.

Wiledflicken uh! Yes, I remember Wildflicken, I spent a year there one month in October of 1958. Hello, To all you good folks that left a message on this board, I enjoyed reading them. I was stationed with the 14th A/C in Badkissingen, from, Nov 1957 till March 1960. I wouldn't take a million dollars to do it again, but I wouldn't take a million dollars for the fond memories that I have of Germany. I still have the crest from the old 14th, you folks that remember "SUIVEZ MOI". If anyone out there would like to have it I would be more then glad to e-mail you a copy, just send your e-mail address and it will be on the way. If anyone can remember me, SP/4 John W. Hey. Nice to see this site is still going strong. I was supply clerk under SSG Wellborn and SSG Spearman from 11-80 thru 4-82.My first field trip I had an old sleeping bag and even though I was allowed to sleep in the supply trailer,I pert-near froze my buns. Needless to say, I soon had a brand new bag. REFORGER 81 was a blast! Charlie Co. was tasked with Manuever Damage Control. If memory serves me correctly, we had our tent city set up outside of Lauterbach.I believe LTC Christman was the battalion CO at the time. Wish I could remember more names from back then. Of course I remember Vic Mayer and Mike Morin. Also Brian Tavegia,Rich Slauson,Bill Paulson,Kim Miller,George King Morash,Tom Wolfe,Decker,Correa,Nieves, Franklin, Trotter,Wayne, two SGT Carr's,SFC Crowe,Dan Metzold.
I rode along with SGT John Carr to take Decker to Rhein-Main when he PCS'd or ETS's. When we got there Decker discovered that he had misplaced his folder with all the important paperwork inside. After scratching our heads and searching our memory we decided that Decker had laid the folder on a nearby car while he was taking his final pictures of Wildflecken. So,after calling the duty SGT and finding out that Yes! they had the folder in hand,we made the long trip back to Wildflecken.Needless to say, I did not ride along for the second trip.
Decker did make it back to Rhein-Main in time to catch the flight Back To The World!
I hope somebody knows these people and clues them in to this web site.

I arrived in Wildflecken in December, quite by accident. I had just came over on the USS Rose, and had caught pnemonia just about the time the ship caught a terrible Atlantic storm. I was to ignorant to get anything for it, so I suffered for 28 days. When I arrived at Bremmerhaven, it was all I could do to haul my bag up the steps to disembark. I then had a lovely two day train ride to Wurtzburg, where we were put in a replacement depot to be assigned. I had a combat engineer MOS. We were put in a room and every now and then someone would come in and ask for vollenteers to go various places. I passed up being a cook, a singer, a band member, and various other jobs. I was so sick, that all I could think of was getting home wherever that may be. I decided that the rule of never vollenteering for anything in the Army, had run it's course, and I was taking the next assignment. Sure enough, a sgt came in and said that they needed three people to go to Wildflecken in the infantry. I went. We were loaded up in the back of a duece and a half, and two and a half hours later I arrived home. I found out later that my unit was marched across the street 10 minutes later and they were home. Oh well.
My memory of the first few days were pretty foggy. Soon I recovered and was put on guard duty. Guess where? The ammo dump. What pray tell were we supposed to do if something did happen. One clip of m-14 ammo does not go very far in a war. No communication, and two hours of the blackest night I had ever seen with hogs the size of APC's. What a way to spend New Years Eve 1964. I spent a lot of time out there but only walked around it one time. Spooky place. I once was there, it seemed always at night, and was particularly edgy. I was standing by the fence, huddled up, and all of a sudden I heard the most eerie sound I had ever heard out in the darkness. I locked and loaded, and fired all remaining rounds into the darkness. I didn't wait for "ready on the right, ready on the left, ready on the fireing line." The noise stopped, and so did my heart as I realized that I now had two hours to go, had no ammo, and had to figure out a way of replacing it so I could turn it in. Another time in early evening, on the only day of Summer, a plane came in real low over the dump and shortly there after, a whole barrage of shooting and I watched the plane go down. Turns out it was a practice drone, but I knew me and my military mind were in for some trouble. Being only 5 K's from the Border, anthing was possible. We were probably the first ones to get in the action.
I learned quite a little German at night from a Berlitz book, and by talking to the Rad fireman. I would go out to little towns where my German outweighed their English, and would just talk to them. When we would go out on manuvers, I would be used as an interpruter.
I remember the manuver damage. Seems like someone always had to run over a chicken and then there was hell to pay. We paid for the chicken, the eggs it would have laid, all of it's descendants that were cut short.
In all of the notes, no-one mentioned the "Ratzkeller" or "TRACK PADS". Put them on in the motor pool, drive down the hill to the bahnhof, take them off, load the track on the rail car, listen to the Rad rave about how it wasn't loaded right, ride a day on the train and eat c rations, then put the damned pads back on and drive to where we were going and do it all again.
When I first got there we had the old M59 tracks. They had one Gmc 6 clyndar one each side. Inevetably only one would start, and all you could do was drive in a circle with one engine. We did graduate to the 113's soon after.
Remember the Billits? Swastikas on the walls, rifle racks in the hallway, and a stove in the room, camoflage net hooks on the roof.
Every thing was either up or down hill. I can't remember the times I fell down the hill from the mess hall. Payday was always scary. The line doggies would come up all brewed to the gills, and they and us armed with entrenching tools, would go at it. Why did they not teach us that an entrenching tool was a deadly weopon in Basic?
K.P. while not a pleasent task, beat guard duty, plus you got to eat a lot.
Some people I remember was my best friend "Froggie",(Dennis Gobel from Canada). Charles Stucky, Jim Emery, Sgt's Crump,Pitner, Bessey, top sgt. Gravette and his petunias, he called them "tunies". Jim Berlew, Rex Riggs, PFC Wimmershoph, who was always recovering from the clap, Lupe Reyes.
I was only 17 when I got there but I grew up. I loved it. I also learned to smoke from the three ciggarets that came in the Charlies. Thanks for doing that Uncle Sam.
I was a track driver, jeep driver, computer for 4.2. In those days a computer was not what it is now.
I was back there with my sisters in 1997. We had little time and in order to get on post I had to waste about two hours. Everything had changed, but the tears still came rolling down my cheeks.
I have fond memories of the "Hill". It seems that others do also. Le.

In either 1974 or 1975 SSG Donald S. Shackett and his squad won MISPIC. I know there was a BIG trophy that the unit or division kept. I am wondering if anyone knows where those trophies might be since Wildflecken was disbanded. I am going to be in Germany this summer, and I would like the grandsons to see their late grandfather's name on the trophy.

THANKS for any help you can give.

Served my time at the Rock just like the rest but maybe got to see and experience a little more of the German culture maybe more than some. Learned to speak enough German so that I could get drunk with the Deutsche and imbibe in a fraulein or at least carry on somewhat of a conversation with the German people. Wish that I could talk to "Herr Schmidt" or Mr. Bosch of the Transportation Motor Pool on WTA. Way cool dudes they were. They used to call me the "Auto Gangster" but I never understood why. Looking for any old friends who was there with me at that time. Joe Smith, aka : "Smitty" is first on the list. CSM Esparza, Cpl Dolan, SP4 Gallegos who never sent me my 2 boxes 0f stuff and you are welcome for the job too dude you gained by my ETS, Sgt Charlie Rimmel, SSg Anderson, SSg Heinen who was always good for a beer or two, and all the Germans up at the Kreuzberghof which became my second home. I found Sp4 Kelvin Whitehead in St.Louis,MO. and we talk almost daily sometimes. Went down there after 20 years of not seeing him and it was like we never were apart. A good bud the old "Fire it up Whitehead!".Well any way if any one remembers me send me a note. Stephen S.

I read with great interest all the little stories in the Widflecken guest book pages. It
makes me feel good reading so many nice stories about this beautiful part of
Germany. I was born in nearby Bad Kissingen and also have a close connection to
Wildflecken. I thought some of you might be interested in my story. I served from
1939 to 1944 in the German army, participating in many battles in France and later in
Russia. 1942 I was captured by the Russian army deep in Russia and after a few
days in POW.. camp I escaped. When the Normandy invasion started we were sent
to France and engaged the seventh U.S. army in battle. In October 1944 I was
captured by the U.S. army. In February 1946 the American army discharged us and
turned us over to the French army. On July I5 I escaped from this prison camp. After
20 days marching mainly during the night, I arrived at my hometown. In 1948 the U.S.
army were looking for former German army personnel, and organized a organization
which they called " labor service unit" we had U.S. Army uniforms (Black } M. 1 rifle's
and where stationed in U.S. barracks. My company was stationed in Bad Kissingen
and later Schweinfurt. At this time the barracks in Wildflecken where occupied by
Eastern European refugees. A. organization called
IRO (international Refugee Organization) she was responsible for returning those refugees .
Most of them did not want to go back which created a problem for the U.S. army who
wanted to use Wildflecken as an army camp. They did not wanted to get themselves
involved in the process of clearing this area, so they had the bride idea to send us to
do the job. I was transferred with my company occupying one small building. Our
order was to evacuate and clean out one building a week. We did this with good
results , and made room for all you guys having the good time, described in this
guest book's. By working all does years very close with American personnel and
learning the American way, there was no question in my mind but to emigrate at the
earliest possible time to these great countrie. Which I did in July of 1953.

Being from Washington state, Wildflecken remined me of home, lots of green hills and very scenic. I spent two years on the 14th A C rifle team and we fired a few matches there, I remember it snowing at the 500 yd line, raining at the 300 yd line and the sun was shining on the pits , crazy weather. W inter training exercises at the rock was not really much fun, I have done quite a bit of mountaineering in my time but I had never expereinced the bitter cold that I went through in Wildflecken. I hope to hear from any person that I may have served with during that time.

Comment

I would like to hear from other dependents who attended Wildflecken Elementary School. If any one can help I would be grateful.I was in Mrs Dormann's room in 1973/74. Some of the students whos names I can remember, were Tina Stire(sp?), Carolyn Adams, Terrell King, Naomi Wright, Michelle Ramos, Mike Northcut, Lori Barns, Cindy Wigly, Diane, Barbie, Heidi, Steve, Tony, Robert. In 1974/75 we had new classmates, Mira Om,& Ken Lones. There was also a teacher Mr Haddad. There was also a Mr & Mrs Ward Who were involved with youth activities at the church on base. Larry Navaro(sp?)who was stationed there.
I was having trouble finding information on Wildflecken tonight. I did not know that the base had close in 93 or 94.
Out of all the places we lived that was my favorite. It was a safe place for a kids. I enjoyed playing & roaming the edge of the forest in front of our building. There was a wide trail that ran from our housing area, through the woods to the officers housing area. It was beautiful and even more so in the winter when it snowed. I don't remember hearing about the early history of the base. I often wondered about that little church or church looking building that was in the woods. I fould the answer tonight while reading about the early years of Wildflecken.
Thanks to all who made the information possible,
Janice

There were a lot of advantages of it being a small post.I really don`t understand why so many are calling it "THE ROCK"I thought that was Okanowa or one of those islands.Maybe someone can clue me in.We called it a lot of things but that was never one of them.We lived on both the econemy and on post so we were familar with living in Germany from all sides.

Three of the greatest years of my life. The rock was a mind altering experience, but I made the best of it. Working at the Rod & Gun club at night and on weekends, opening thousands of Kulmbachers and selling rib eye's and steak sandwiches. Damn, that Adam could cook. Hubert keeping the grunts, engineers and armor heads in line. The juke box that didn't get shut off all night.
Oh yeah, I was in the Army too. Worked as company clerk and then Training NCO for B 2/15. Top James Austin, Cpt Ringgold, Lt. Navarre, Sgt. Garvin, Rick Funk, SP4 Black, Terry Rachas, Jeff Doherty, Favozo. The names just keep coming back as do the memories. Especially the fateful day when Bryan Negrey tried to fly my motorcycle from Margrets to the Rock. Rode the med-evac with him to Wurzburg. Bryan, you are the greatest! We will drink a Victory Dark Lager soon! If anyone reads this who knew me or , please get in contact.

Hello everybody!

I think a lot of soldiers who were stationed in WTA know me.
I used to work at the Property Book Office, USMCA Wildflecken from 1975-1983 and 1989-1994. From 1984-1988 I was the Supervisor of the Central Issue Facility.
For those who would like to take a look at Wildflecken and see how the former Military Community has changed I have done a few Panorama pictures you can take a look at on http://www.hreinhart.de.
If someone has any special requests about an area he/she would like to see just place a comment in my guestbook and I will do my best to publish it.
Thats it for today.

I was in the army postal unit that ran APO 26. We had a branch unit in Fulda and each day our mail truck made a run to Bad Hersfeld to pick up and/or deliver the mail. The truck would stop in Fulda on the way. Our quarters were on the third floor of the post office--right accross from the NCO club. The MP's lived on the second floor and the MP station was in the back of the post office right off the little parking lot . We had about eight men in Wildflecken and three who were in Fulda. Not bad duty--

My dad was stationed at WTA in headquarters and also managed the NCO club and officers club on base. Looking for Jerry Lycans, Joe Waddell, Mike Stewart and any other friends from Wildflecken. My mom, Connie, worked at the Education Center. Remember Father Taddy? Remember "temporary quarters" on base, basically the attics of half of the buildings? If anyone remembers my dad, please email me, he would love to hear from any and all. Thanks, Dana

After retiring from the Army in 1992, I moved to Toerwang (Southern
Bavaria). I taught mathematics for the University of Marland-European
Division to soldiers and their families in Hohenfels, Augsburg and Bad
Aibling Station. I taught my last class during the summer of 2000 at
Bad Aibling. Throughout this time I was active in L.I.F.E. (Living In
Focus Everyday), a weekend ministry to U.S. soldiers and their families
stationed in Europe.
I have been attending Denver Seminary in Denver Coloardo since September 1999.
I plan to graduate on 17 May 2002 with a Masters of Divinity degree.
I was ordained as a deacon in the Anglican Church on 13 January 2002
and anticipate being ordained as a priest shortly after graduation in
May 2002. I plan to return to our home in Bavaria after graduation as
a missionary. We will see where the Lord leads me next.

I visited Wildflecken several times in the last few years. What a bummer. No hi-life, not much life at all. Everything closed and restricted to a few Bundeswehr troops. Can't get near the old missile site, hmpph. Well worth a visit to see the countryside again! All B Btry personnel. Drop a line, NOW!

I miss Wildflecken tremendously and cannot tell you about all the wonderful people I have met there. Wildflecken will stay in my memories forever. Since living in the US, I have only been back 2 times to see my family. I have been acustomized to Central Texas (Fort Hood area) but thing are just not the same here without all my old friends. Please, anybody that knows me or knew somebody that knew me, drop me a line and tell me how you are doing. It would be nice to have some contact with people I used to know again. I miss Wildflecken and the times I had there. I hope all of the people I have met or have crossed my life are doing well and their wishes came true.

Love you all.

Had good and bad times, but only remember the good.Do remember doing our morning strolls with rucksacks, out one gate and in the other, uphill from there:}.Or the fine skis that lay in the supply room,I was told they were the best you could buy,Too bad they forgot to order the boots and bindings that went with them:{.Or the time the radio operator disabled the H 34 helicopter,he chipped a rotor with his antenna so we got to walk home.

Great Site.

My daughter was studying for a geography test and I got to thinking about "The Rock". I soon found myself reading through the guestbook laughing and remembering when. I noticed that alot of the entries I read said that, "We miss the rock" or "It was the most wonderful duty station I ever had". I think I was either on guard duty at the lower motor pool or downtown drunk and fighting. Any time that I made "the man" I took the opportunity to sleep off a drunk or smoke. Don't do either one anymore. I miss the monastary but I think I miss the food the most. I would love to go back and eat for a week. Has anyone seen my old friends, Dave(Bo)Bober, Henry(Spankin'Hank)Brown, Bobby Caldwell, Freddy Meledez,? We lived in the lower HHC billets with battalion mantinence, the medics and the cooks. I had a blast shammin' with support platoon for 18 months. I was Sgt. Clark's driver and Bobby drove the jeep for Lt. Lane and none of us liked Cpt. Fong..... C.O. from hell. haha. Do any of you tankers remember those goers? Clankity clank YOU drove a tank....DUH!! I still have my stein from the monks, lol

Rock,
I was stationed at Daley Barracks, Bad Kissingen from
September 1965 to March of 1967. Began as a private
in a scout section and ended the tour as a sergeant E-5
in the mortar section. Change of MOS came as a good number
of troops were shipped to Ft. Lewis, Washington for duty in
Viet Nam. Only recently have I begun to use the WEB to search
for information regarding my military duty. I loved Germany and
what a pleasure it is to access a great WEB sight such as yours.
Many thanks!! Also, I have a very close friend that was
stationed in Bad Aibling from 1959 to 1962 with the 320th
ASA Battalion. If you have any info regarding this unit during
his tour could you please email us at the above address.
Again many thanks and we look forward to hearing from you.

Where does one start after time spent on the real "Rock"? I drove for CAPT. Mitch Howell III and then went to TOW PLT Heavey Weapons. It was great to see names like Tank and Wilkerson on this site. How about Rick Funk, Gary Black, Roach Coach Carey, Flowers, Baby Huey, Ozzie, Kooch, Ricky Choate and never forget Mac! Does anyone out there even remotely remember going to French Commando in Trier? We were the first American contingent to finish it 100%. If you have a copy of that paperwork, I'll pay good money for it! Where you a member of Delta house? I lost sooo many brain cells in those barracks. How many times did you come back from the Kruezberg with just the handle of your stein. Or just the pleasure of running up to that SOB to touch the cross? Waking up on the dump for a 0-dark shift. I made "THE MAN" 8 times during guard mount. Now the biggest memory of all. Took Mac's scooter for a blurry ride one afternoon and tried to jump from Hilda"s to the Rock, but crashed and burned. Medvac'd my ass all the way to the world. I'm still in and am working on E-8. Hope to hear from any freaks and geeks that pulled the WTA tour. Peace Through Superior Firepower !!!

I had great friends there, saw a lot of Europe, enjoyed the going to the monastery and drinking that wonderful dark beer they made, remember the cold winters, the warm summers, PT every morning, running 5 mi on Fridays (sometimes with Gas Mask on), freezing on winter maneuvers riding around in APC's with no heaters, etc..
