This is a wonderful website. I am a German living in Tennessee and I was in the German Luftwaffe and we had a training exercise in Wildflecken. At my workplace a person who just started working there a couple of weeks ago and he was wearing a German Flecktarn jacket just like I used to wear it while in the service. So I found out he spent time in Wildflecken with the US Army and there he got that jacket somehow. Now we meet here in a factory near Nashville, TN. I am also glad that there is a Bible-believing independent Baptist Church in Wildflecken. When I looked through the photos on this website I noticed the former movie theatre on the Wildflecken post and thought this would be a perfect meetingplace for the next church and for revivals and evangelistic meetings. I wonder if the German leadership at Wildflecken would be open for this. I have seen another German military post where the Mennonites got the old movie theatre and turned it into a house of worship. Praise God! Maybe in Wildflecken, too!

I'll never forget sitting in the barracks on Christmas eve night feeling sorry for myself as I spent another holiday away from family. I was visited by the ghost of Christmas present in the form of Corporal Zimmerman, a 33year old (that seemed really old to me back then) ex-lumberjack with biceps so large he had to cut half of the sleeves off his fatigues to be accomplish the rolled up sleeve required for the summer uniform. He stuck his head in the door just so he could deliver one of what I considered the most Heart-felt "Merry Christmas" I ever received. I realized that I WAS experiencing Christmas with family, those unable for one reason or another to go home for the holidays. Those that stayed behind so that others would be able to visit their relatives for the holidays.

Merry Christmas to All those soldiers past and present and most of all
Merry Christmas to you, Cpl.

What an experience? I loved every minute at Wildflecken. I am in Bamberg now. Looking for Roland & Marlyn Haas, I saw Don Hall and wife Young on this site, no contact info. Looking for Randy Spotts. Anybody with info let me know. I was a mechanic in the motor pool for all of the units. Seems like they didn't know where they wanted us. Oh well, take care, God Bless. Drop me a line!!

Hey Didi,

Came up for Aschaffenburg for the good weather and beer, (guess which is true)a few times. Never was there in the warm times of the year. I recall just how cold area Novermber is in March and how much fun railheading in the snow and dark can be. I now realize that I had fun and enjoyed the field . I went back to Germany in 2001 looking for that young SP/5 and found an older man who appreciated he good times and people he served with and that we did good things back in those days. I'll never forget Germany or Wildflecken, Grafenwohr, Hoenfelds.

The monastery beer, The steaks at the Rod and Gun club, the little pizza place at the bottom of the hill. These are the things I think about. Food fixation ? possibly. We drank, we ate, we played war with the entire 101st Div for Reforger.

Life was good for awhile. Thanks for the memories guys.

Was sniper in Company-C, then C Company Clerk, then Clerk in Battallion Headquarters. Spent my spare time traveling Germany and Europe. Someone said that Elvis was on base and getting a haircut, but I didn't go see him. I have some pictures of Wildflecken 1957-59. I went back & visited Wildflecken in 1975 during an 11 week vacation & again in 1988 when I went over to pick up a VW Camper at the factory.

I never thought I'd miss the place, but looking back now I realize what a great time I had there. I made many good friends and really enjoyed the scenery as well as the culture. Trips to the Monastery, the ski hill, the wasserkuppe, swimming at Guckaisee and the many times manning "The hill" are etched upon my mind. I visited again back in 1994 just to get one last look before the post was handed over to the Germans. It saddened me to see how lifeless the place was but it reminded that the only thing that is constant is change. Every once in a while I pull out the scrap book and reminisce about the great times I had. Send me an e-mail if you’re interested in pictures or just talking about the good old days.

Rodney and his sports car, the Polish cemetery, and the Octoberfest and beer. Also the drugs. (I been a baaaad boy) Worked the mess hall, got lucky and only went to the field once, and never any guard duty.
My greatest memories of all are the guys, and the surrounding forrest.

Wildflecken was always "my favorite place." As a customs investigator in Schweinfurt, we were responsible for the Wildflecken post. I remember going up there, greeting the labor service guard at the gate, and driving up that cobblestone street to the post, replete with it's "7th ATC" trimmings (plenty of signs).

I used to ski at the Kreuzberg every weekend.

I dated Brigitte Ziegler who was an interpreter at the MP station. I would love to get in contact with her again.

In 1988, my best friend Jim Printy and a good friend of mine Don Monroe were stationed in Wildflecken and lived in the same stairwell out in "Little Manhattan." I never visited Don, but he ended up committing suicide at the MP desk. Jim and I, on the other hand, had visited the Monastery many times, enjoying those cold mugs of beer and the "snappy wieners" that the munks served. We hike up to that Kreuzberg every time I visited Wildflecken.

I was accept for assignment to the MP station in Wildflecken in 1990, but due to a mixup, was never able to accept the assignment. I remember my interview for the position from the captain in charge of the MP station....why do you want to be stationed in Wildflecken?

The reason was, because it epitomized being stationed in Germany. The remote location, the German-American friendship and just the area was what I wanted.

Never forgot what it was like on "The Hill". Think of the times both on top and in many of the towns close by. Would like to hear from some of the guys if they're out there; Gary Ottone, James Liscomb, Mazziotta, Dennis Dvous I could go on and on. Would especially like to get in touch with Lt. Losch and or Capt. Pinzutti, both good guys. Think often of the Rod and Gun Club, remember the T-bone steak and beer dinners or the end of the month parties when no one would have any money left.

I read with great interest all the little stories in the Widflecken guest book pages. It
makes me feel good reading so many nice stories about this beautiful part of
Germany. I was born in nearby Bad Kissingen and also have a close connection to
Wildflecken. I thought some of you might be interested in my story. I served from
1939 to 1944 in the German army, participating in many battles in France and later in
Russia. 1942 I was captured by the Russian army deep in Russia and after a few
days in POW.. camp I escaped. When the Normandy invasion started we were sent
to France and engaged the seventh U.S. army in battle. In October 1944 I was
captured by the U.S. army. In February 1946 the American army discharged us and
turned us over to the French army. On July I5 I escaped from this prison camp. After
20 days marching mainly during the night, I arrived at my hometown. In 1948 the U.S.
army were looking for former German army personnel, and organized a organization
which they called " labor service unit" we had U.S. Army uniforms (Black } M. 1 rifle's
and where stationed in U.S. barracks. My company was stationed in Bad Kissingen
and later Schweinfurt. At this time the barracks in Wildflecken where occupied by
Eastern European refugees. A. organization called
IRO (international Refugee Organization) she was responsible for returning those refugees .
Most of them did not want to go back which created a problem for the U.S. army who
wanted to use Wildflecken as an army camp. They did not wanted to get themselves
involved in the process of clearing this area, so they had the bride idea to send us to
do the job. I was transferred with my company occupying one small building. Our
order was to evacuate and clean out one building a week. We did this with good
results , and made room for all you guys having the good time, described in this
guest book's. By working all does years very close with American personnel and
learning the American way, there was no question in my mind but to emigrate at the
earliest possible time to these great countrie. Which I did in July of 1953.

Hey all-
I'm still looking for anyone in 144th while I was there. Does anyone remember the "missing ammo"? Remember being in lock down until they found the person who stole it? Remember Top's door being jimmy rigged w/ explosives? Gosh, the good ol' days. I miss everyone and still think about my time on the rock.

What a place. What an experience. I remember kneeling on the ground with a soldering torch thawing the ground to drive in tent stakes at 0400. I remember spending Xmas eve 1986 with everyone from the barracks passing around bottles of everything, singing carols, and telling jokes and tales in between. Some of the times really sucked, others were just magnificent. Whatever the case, the only way I tolerated the place was through the companionship and comaradity. More importantly, any success I've enjoyed since has largely been the product of the fine associations I was fortunate to have had. I was surrounded by the finest people one can ever hope to meet.

I was a section supervisor in the SARPAC Team 2 Regional Personnel Center after a brief stay in 2/15th. If you processed in or out during the period of June, 72 - December, 74 you were likely processed by me. I generally make an entry in the Guestbook once a year or so to see if I can find any of my old buddies. Have found and emailed Rios, J.R. and my son Holger. During the time I was in Wildflecken, I hated it, but I find it strange that I always keep coming back to this site.

25 years have gone by since I tossed my boots goodbye into the big oak tree next to the old 54th barracks. I came back to California and got on with an everyday life, but still remember a lot of good people and good times from Wildflecken. Yeah, there were lousy times too, but that usually had something to do with being half frozen in the winter or maybe homesick. But I still keep a picture hanging on the wall, with a view from the barracks window looking out across the snow covered rooftops towards the Kreuzberg.

Anyone around from Heavy Junk platoon? Lt Brown, SFC Koltes, SSgt Grey, SSgt Six, Brooks, Allen, Landrie, Herd, Nelson, Jarding, DeLa Cruz, Kelly, Angelo, Doligosa? About 20 yrs ago I ran into DeLa Cruz over in Kona, where we had a few beers, told a bunch of stories and laughed for hours. I ran into Bert Angel a couple of times when I was going to college at Sacramento State. Lost track of everyone else. Lived in Jersey for three years but never could reach Landrie in Bayonne.

Funny thing, after all these years I keep running into people that spent time at Wildflecken or have heard about it. I'll be over in Europe this fall for a while, so I'll have to take a side trip up into the hills just to see the old place again. Do they let in ex-GIs for a visit to the musuem?

aloha from hawaii!!!!
I'm so glad to have found this website!!!! I have very fond memories of wildflecken as a child. I remember going to school from 2nd to the 5th grade, playing little league baseball with the Holidays, playing with tadpoles at the pond behind the baseball field, playing tackle football with john mcghee and friends in the park infront of where we lived, skiing and sleding down to the bunkers, playing pool and doing leather work at the activities center, cubscouts, eating breakfast at the rod and gun club after going to fr. taddy's mass on sundays, ridning my 10 speed bike to toyland then riding clear accross wildflecken to the german army's "px" to find out that they had better models than our px, going to school just to challenge everyone to play teatherball, and the list goes on!!!!
To anyone who reads this and remembers our family, which consisted of artemeo "tim" (my dad who was a platoon sargent in the 54th engneers), leonora "lee" (my mom who used to work at the coustomer service counter at the american army's px), rene (my oldest sister who went to wurzberg, helped out at the children's day care, and played her 12 string guitar during mass on sundays), michele, and I..... aloha from hawaii!!!! email me at bramos8761@aol.com so we can catch up.

This is my annual signing - I am sad to see the guestbook deteriorating. It used to be so well maintained.. Now it's over run with nonsense messages and rubbish no one wants to read. Having said that, Here I am again - trying to keep the tradition going for all of us who loved (however grudgingly) WFL, snow and all! I have been in Germany once again since Nov.1999 and now it's almost time for me to return to the USA again *heavy sigh here* I am thinking of trying to retire in the UK or even here - would love to hear from all my old WFL side-kicks! I was the Entertainment director there - You know, Recreation center theatre etc. We were where the fun was.. Remember the "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" debacle...back when soldiers were really wild and crazy...If you getr a chance to read this.. get in touch - If you're in Germany - William and I will have you up to our place on the Mountain in the Odenwald. Take care and Peace for our guys in the Mid-East.

Ahhh - Wildflecken! "The 7 Steps to Hell!" We even had our jackets embroidered with that phrase on the back of it! I was in CSC 1/68 Armor Battalion in 1982-83 (Cav Scout Platoon) 20 years later I'm still trying to get my life back in order. I guess you could call it "Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome" due to my duty at Wildflecken, and I'm quite sure I'm not the only one during that era with that same problem. I'm wishing to correspond with anyone at wildflecken during that era - Bruce Swanson CSC 1/68 Armor - Cav Scout - out!!!!

2/15th. The 3rd Inf Div society is holding there annual reunion in St Louis september 18-21, 2003. Membership is $10.00 a year. For you Baseball fans, the Cardinals will be in town, playing the Astros that weekend. It should make for a great time. Cardinals and Astros always put on a good show. I hope to see as many there as can make it. Too bad we can't come up with a Wildflecken reunion. Would like to have one someday soon. Thanks

What a great Web Site. I was trying to find out information on Wildflecken for my daughter who is going to Germany with her husband next year. (he is in the Air Force), when I ran into this site. I have been stationed several places in my career and I always think of Wildflecken, in my heart and in my career, more than any other. I guess it may be because of my youthful age at the time. I retired 6 years ago and before I retired I could tell you the names of 70% of the people I was stationed with. As I move away from that time in my life, it becomes more difficult to remember the names and/or faces. There was just to much going on then, both career and maturing. Sorry guys this is not the place to be arguing about this or that. I guess some things will necver change. Especially the animosity between the proud MP Corps and the equally proud Combat Arms. We have all done a wonderful job and have many proud wonderful memories of our time spent in Wildflecken no matter what we call it.

I remember SFC Scalf, my first Scout Platoon Sergeant when I first went to 2/15th in 1977. I received a compassionate re-assignment in Aug of that year and went to Ft Leavenworth.( the outside). When I got back to Germany I requested, from the time I got back to Franfort, to go to the 3rd ID. When I got to Wuerzburg they said do not even bother to request an assignment, we will send you where we need you. I got up in front of about 40 other guys and said I know what you just said, but who do I need to see to request an assignment to 2/15th in Wildflecken? At this time I had about 82 eyeballs looking at me like I had lost my mind. I was told well we will see. Needless to say I was on a train to Wildflecken the next day. My first Platoon Sergeant this time was SSG Baker, the best and most knowledgeable Platoon Sergeant I would ever have. Not to take anything away from SFC Finch. The names are hard to come by but people like Jerry Hines, Doug Meyers, SSG Steel(C Co), Jeff Scmidt, Lt Hurst, Lt Turner, Lt Stewart(whom I ran into later), Sgt Zettlemoyer?, and who could ever forget Spc/Pvt Howard who could never keep track of his TA-50, LTC Beal who loved alerts, what about White (Tennessee who he was known as), sorry Tennessee I had no choice, wht was his name SSG Lankford or Ledford or something, the ex-recruiter who was fired in the recruiting scandall of the seventies.

We used to always say your short when you eat supper in Wildflecken and use the bathroom, the next day, in the states. Now I long to be back there again with the people and surroundings that help shape me into a man. If any remembers me, good or bad, please respond. If there is a reunion, in the future, let me know. I am as good as there.

Hallo Marc
Ausgezeichnet! Grossartig! Super Seite , die Ihr hier habt, macht weiter so!
One of the best guest books that I have every read. I was stationed with C.Co. 14th ACR in Fulda for two and one half years and was on the Regimental Rifle team for two years. We would use the firing range from time to time at Wildflecken. There were 5 flags for wind direction on the range. One on each corner and they all blew in different directions but the one that you really had to watch was the one in the middle the blew straight up.

I remember arriving at WTA on a foggy, rainy day and I cried wanting
to go back home. But after finding the friends we had and joining
the Post Chapel, I changed my mind quickly. I just loved the place!
And you know what, I cried again, but this time, it was when we were
PCSing back to the states. What a wonderful community we had, the great friends and wonderful holidays we had. You would have to be assigned at WTA to understand that. Germany was good to us and we did
alot of things we could never do in the states. I thank God that we had such a wonderful assignment. Wildflecken was a beautiful place to live and enjoy life. I still miss it.

Hallo !

Hi Folks, There is an online petition being taken to urge the D.O.D. to award a medal to those who served during the Cold War Era. I personally feel that we (I served 61-64) deserve some recognition for our service to our country. The Congress approved the issuance of the medal and the money is already in the budget, but D.O.D.(Sec. Rumsfeld) for some reason has decided not to do it. I would appreciate it if you would think it over, and if you agree with me,go to the site and sign the petition. You DO NOT have to be a Cold War Veteran to sign, just a citizen of the U.S.A.. Hallo!
in dem US lager.

Vielen Dank Ihre Ute Zeitz

Very interesting to see Wildflecken again. My unit trained there several times, and we had some "interest" in several specific pieces of ground on and around the training area when there were still two Germanies. The countryside was beautiful, and the somber white crosses along the steep curves on the tank trail were thought-provoking.

I have a little more information about Elvis's time in Germany. I had a friend who was stationed in (I believe) Friedburg, with 2-27 FA in the 1978-1981 time frame. He said there was an armor battalion on their kaserne, in one of whose company barracks was a placque on the wall that stated that this was where Elvis's unit was stationed. He apparently was given permission to live off post but otherwise went by all the same rooms.

My friend told me that the information on the placque stated that Elvis spent a good deal of his own money to provide amenities for the orderly room of his company, such as nice furniture, game equipment, magazine subscriptions, etc.

This sounds consistent with a lot of the other things I have heard about Elvis; that he was very likeable and would do just about anything for people he considered his friends and comrades. Even though I was never a tremendous fan of his music, I have always liked that about him. It's a shame that so many tragic things occurred in his life. But no matter what else is said about him, I admire him for putting on the uniform and doing a good soldier's job when he probably could easily have gotten out of it.

Can't remember the unit, but we supported the Tanks of the 68th. we were a small detachment of a unit out of Mainze.. We lived in a barracs on the 3rd floor, half of the floor was occupied by German civilian Guards, and the first 2 floors were occupied by an Ordanance CO. If there is anyone out there from the unit, or remembers people fron the unit, please contact me..Myself and another specilist, (Fleming) were in fire control support for the unit..Thanks

I am looking for anyone who might have known SSG Don Shackett, 1SG Jimmy Holt and his wife Carol, SP4 John Henry Holt and his wife Faye.

THANK you so much.

I look forward to hearing from other "survivors" of Wildflecken.
I visited Wildflecken this summer, and it was sad to see her just sitting there wasting away. I have many fond memories of our time there.

I was one of the lucky ones that only visited the Chicken twice in
my 6 year tour in Fulda. The first time was my Door Gunner Qualification on a huey (UH1H). The second time I even had to spend
the night there. But thank god it was summer. As I was a turbine
engine mech. I had to be there in case one of our birds got sick.
Y`all have built a great site. Keep up the good work.

I remember the times we pulled manuevers in that cold place. We even lost a VTR that slid off the hill and down into some woods. Didnt get it out until spring time.I hope to visit Germany one day before i get much older. Really wants to see Fulda again. If any 14th acr members see this please contact me.
