The best of times and the worst of times LOL ! I learned just how much I could endure. I really had the best times of my life there. We stuck together ! We had a mascot named Bravo, he was always getting busted for screwing with the MP's dogs ! I wonder if the Zwie Tannen is still open ?

Many great memories of the place that I once thought of as hell. Now that I look back at my time there I should of enjoyed it more. Many nights at the Zwei tanen and going to Suhl and Bad Neustadt to the Glashaus. Would like to hear from anyone who might of been stationed with the 58th CEC.

My wife and I were in Wildflecken between 12/1970 and 02/1972. I was an Army Lieutenant in the 144th Ordnance Company, 15th Ordnance Battalion. We originally lived in Oberweisenbrun and later lived at Werberger Weg #1 in Wildflecken. Diethert and Elsa Romeis were our landlords. Looking for others who were there during the same time frame.

Was assigned to Company C 54th Combat Engr. Came in as an E2 and left as an E4. While there I took advantage of being in Europe and did alot of traveling.
I do remember the winters and field trips in the winter. Of course the big event was building the float bridge I think across the Rhine. Remember being on alert when
Russia went into Prague. Tasted Schnapps for the first time and still have a taste today. I guess I was lucky being assigned there. Better than Nam.

I have good thoughts of Wildflecken, and the people there.
I wish that I would have could remember more of my time there, I had just came from Nam and my head was really screwed backwards.
Please let me say I am sorry to anyone I may have hurt. I do have a son in Wildflecken, he is 40 years old now.

I enjoyed my duty at Wildflecken most of the time. Getting there as an E-2 and Having most of your unit out on deployment and getting stuck on guard duty at first seemed dismal. But after my fellow soldiers arrived back at the barracks and I got to know them. I made some of the best friends I had ever made in the Army. At first I was a "barracks rat" and didn't leave the post for several months, then had the realization, DUH. There is alot to see plus my brother was stationed in Heidelburg. Made 2 trips there to see him and his wife. The downtown area was awesome, as was the local food. Of course who can forget the numerous trips to the Kreutzburg Monastary...WOW. Even though I was in the commo section of our company, I was friends with everyone from the Motor Pool to the Hawk Tac Site. Once my brother, and a high school friend of ours from Mo.,(all of us in the Army), and a few more friends piled into a small german car of one of my barracks buddies and drove to the monastary. Let me tell you the drive back was pretty hectic, barely had room to shift the car and in the middle of a typical Wildflecken winter...Too Damn Funny!!!
I am busy trying to track down old friends from my duty time here. I wish the Army had kept better track of where the units were moved to and of the unit pictures. It would make it so much more simplier. As someone once said about Wildflecken...Either you loved it or you hated it. I would choose the former. And now I have to schedule a tour to come on post since it was handed back to the German Military back in 1994. But alas, nothing lasts forever. If any of my old bud's ever want to contact me please do.
I am doing my best to find you.

I'm glad to see this great site still up and running. I signed the guestbook way back in 1998, but have stopped by to visit here many times since.
I was in B-6-562nd from late 1964 til mid 1967. I started working in the Motor Pool with Sgt. Burt, Sp. VanHoorwedge(sp?) and Moose Karas and Ronald Lewis. Moose introduced me Nana Mouskori music, still one of my favorites.
Later I worked the Supply Room with Sgt. Bolongue(sp?) and Murray, Dillon and Lewandowski. I remember Johnsey in the Orderly Room, and before him, "Beach", 1st Sgts Schmidt and MacCauly, Capt Billie R. Garrett, and Capt Burgin, Lt. Chenoux(sp?) and Lt. Quinlin, A.J. Tripodi in Commo, Lots of other names and faces keep coming back to me as I write this. Although trouble had a way of finding while I was there, all of my memories are good ones. It is hard to believe that was all over 40 years ago.
May all who stop by here be well, happy and peaceful.
Joe

I was assigned to the U.S. Army Trial Defense Service Office, Fulda Branch Office as a SP5 (later SGT) Legal Specialist/NCO.

The USATDS Fulda Branch Office provided military defense representation and services to the soldiers of the 11th ACR to include those stated in Wildflicken.

I made many trips to Wildflicken Training Area. It was one of the best kept secrets of the Army as far as a duty station went.

My daughter was born in Fulda, Germany. My wife and I have fond memories of our time in Fulda and Germany.

May God bless all former members of the Border Legion!

I was an army brat, my dad was a combat engineer. I lived just inside the front gate on State Strasse. Used to defiantly walk up the Helmut Patzke trail as a 13 year old boy, an area which was prohibited(reputedly due to many active landmines still in the area.) There were ruins of old buildings there, plus underground tunnels that were called by the locals "the Polish Bakeries"
You could follow the Helmut Patzke trail up to Helmut Patzke Strasse. Walking up the hill, to one's left was a deep ravine seperating the trail from the main cobblestone road. I remember in 1990(if memory serves) there were snow flurries in July! I remember much about this post, many fond memories. I went to highschool for one year in Fulda - 45 minutes bus ride away. What a pleasure to revisit these old memories as I turn 30 this year and since have completed a tour as a US service member myself!

Wildflecken and the 564th MP Co, 3rd platoon. Just a platoon of 25 guys on a huge post. Patroling on/off post clubs and bars, "Green Goose", "Zwei Tannen" and the dance club "Cintal" in Bad Bruckeneau. Responding to Little Manhattan housing area for domestics, responding to the autobahn for accidents, Going to the Kruezberg to bring soldiers there and pick them up to make sure they get back safe!!! Working with the Polizie, New Years Eve 1989 riot in OberWeissenbrunn with Barnes, Driving around range road without getting killed. "That was the biggest rabbit I'd ever seen!" Driving around the border with Lograsso and Wilson inside the 1K zone!! Spending all of my $$ at the sight and sound for the biggest speakers money can buy, is that elementary school really haunted? Cutting our Christmas tree down with Lograsso on range road. And of course the bad; SFC Monroe suicide, Strickland shooting in Gershfeld, fatal accidents range road. Germany was great and being assigned to Wildflecken just made my tour there great. Dropping mortars with the Brits & Canadians. I will never forget the beer at the Kreuzberg!! I can go on and on!!!!

I loved Wildflecken. Served in 1-68 Armor, Company B. 1st Platoon. How I miss the Cold War. Wildflecken was the last of my 3 tours in Germany. One thing that sticks in my mind. There was a tank, I think a Sherman, that used to sit on the hill next to our Mess Hall. One day myself and a friend were coming out of the messhall when the tank started rolling, slowly and rolled right down the hill, jumped off the ledge and went through the wall of one of the barrakc. 10 minutes earlier there was a formation right where the tank landed. I lived in Oberbach. Surrounded by mountains. Loved the snow through most of the winter (ANd part of the Spring and Fall for that matter). No TV until we finally had the ability to get Eurosat. Loved running up and down the cobblestone street from top of the hill to the front gate and back for PT (NOT!). Anyone remember what the name of the ruins was on Wildflecken?

Was in Europe on vacation Dec/Jan and stopped by Wildflecken hoping to get on post and check things out...alas no luck. But having not been there since 1984 it was a shame to see how dead it was. Not the Stadt Wildflecken is in decline by any means, but to not see a ton of GI's running around was a shock. And also to see that the economy no longer had a need for a million bars was kind of funny as well. Wanted to hit the monastery, but wsa in a rental car and decided it would not have been very smart. Man I loved Wildflecken!
